Favourite music?
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:24:53 PM »
Howdy,

Just wondering what British bands most Americans like/enjoy? Or what American bands do the Brits like? It can be anything from modern to the classic ol' 60's rock. Classical to thrash metal. Anything!

I'll start:

British

Muse, Rolling Stones, Erasure, Phill Collins, Coldplay, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Cult, Newton Faulkner, etc

American

Boston, Greenday, Stabbing Westward, REM, Joe Purdy, Run DMC, The Fray, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, etc

Ooh, I like this. My husband (British) and I (American) are big-time music nerds, and spend way way too much money on listening to/buying music! These are just some of our favorites, but we both have almost maxed out 40 gig iPods, so it's just a small selection:

British
Elbow, Archie Bronson Outfit, Clinic, Idlewild, King Creosote, La's, Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure, Sons & Daughters, David Bowie, Donovan, Radiohead, Echo & the Bunnymen, Elvis Costello, the Cribs, the Fall, Muse, Futureheads, Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, Maximo Park, Led Zep,

American
The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, The National, Warlocks, Black Angels, Kings of Leon, Midlake, My Morning Jacket, NIN, Elliot Smith, Devendra Banhart, Iron and Wine, Pixies, Fugazi, The Shins, Two Gallants, Band of Horses, Blonde Redhead, Willy Mason, BRMC, Devo, Eels, Queens of the Stoneage, Grandaddy, Ramones, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Spindrift, They Might Be Giants, Tool, Tom Waits...

gosh, there's so much great music in this world, and so little time to listen to it all!
Ok, so I'm smug.

Hey a Two Gllants fan. I have a friend who is absolutely obsessed with them!

This is a funny thread because on my way to work this morning American Music by The Violent Femmes came on my iPod which got me thinking about the differences and I had a long, musing walk to work.

Lets see...

British
Idlewild, Gorillaz, Maximo Park, Life Without Buildings, The Futureheads, Kenickie, Goldfrapp, YourCodeNameIs:Milo, Blur, Moloko, The Clash, Eric Clapton, Massive Attack, Portishead, Queen, The Zutons

American
The Smashing Pumpkins, The White Stripes, Beastie Boys, Weezer, Le Tigre, Iron & Wine, The Detroit Cobras, We Are Scientists, Modest Mouse, Interpol, Jurassic 5, Kings of Leon, Electric Six, The Postal Service, The Shins, Outkast, Beck, Louis XIV
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

My absolute favourite rock band is neither British nor American, but French. My partner and I are both rabid fans of Indochine. Allez Nicola! We also like the Spanish band Amaral and she likes the Catalan band Antònia Font. As you might guess we are not big fans of anglo saxon music although I do like The Cure, Flaming Lips, The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, and we are both big fans of Placebo.

American

 [...] John Cale.

John Cale is Welsh. He was born in Garnant, Carmarthenshire, about 5 miles east of Ammanford on the A474. Welsh is his first language.

UK-
the Jam, Paul Weller, Style Council, Keane, Coldplay, Travis, Stones, Beatles (of course!), Bowie, Led Zep, Oasis, the Adicts (I looooove the Adicts), my hubbie-Toy Dolls and the Adicts. So funny, if you saw my husband-tall, handsome, distinguished looking auditor that no one suspects of listening to the Adicts on his way home from the office! haha!  :D
US-
Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Jack Johnson (US?), X, the Doors, Stevie Nicks, Van Morrison (US?)
There's soooo much more, but I noticed my US list is a little shorter...I've always loved British music more, don't know why. Well, that was fun!  :D

He or she sounds cute! It is also the French name for "Indo-China", the region that contains Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, etc...

Isn't Dave Matthews originally from South Africa?

UK - Squeeze, The Proclaimers, The Beautiful South, Madness, Genesis, Coldplay

(North) America - R.E.M., The Barenaked Ladies (I know they're Canadian, that's why I said North America LOL)

Another longtime fave band of mine which is impossible to categorize this way - The Police (as they are 2/3 Britsih and 1/3 American)
Maroon Passport Club!

There are just way too many to mention. We both like almost everything (he hates opera, I hate Tori Amos).

A large portion of our combined collections are made up of UK punk, UK hip hop and rap, US rock, US/UK indie, and everything else imaginable.

The last 5 things we've listened to in the car were:

1. Sub Pop 300 CD that came with a magazine (singing along to Green River and L7!)
2. Nas - Untitled
3. Marvin [formerly the martian] - The Blogspot Mixtape
4. Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City
5. Our own mix of Akira the Don tracks
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

Yes, I'm aware of that.
