Borat is actually played by an English guy, Sacha Baron Cohen. My favourite British comedy is "Still Game". I'm sorry to say I haven't actually got any favourite American comedies, although I used to watch Frasier years ago.

It was written, produced by, and stars the British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, and that makes it British comedy in my book.

Not to mention the character was developed on The 11 o'Clock Show (British), was spun off to a successful series (British), that was then shifted to co-production with HBO.

As for best comedies, a short list of TV shows.... (my full list is about three pages long and forms the basis of my dissertation!):

Only Fools and Horses
The Office (UK)
The Office (US)
Friends
Seinfeld
Coupling (UK)
Red Dwarf
I Love Lucy
King of Queens
Everybody Loves Raymond
Everybody Hates Chris
The Cosby Show
Desmond's
I'm Alan Partridge (actually, the entire Partridge trilogy)

We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

English - The Royle Family, The Inbetweeners, Peep Show
US - The American Office (so much better than the UK version)

'My Family' is, in my mind, the least funny show ever made in the history of the world.

And Borat is TOTALLY English!

It is certainly up there. (And created by an American, produced in an American style, and using American writing processes.)

UK
Shameless
Peep Show
Father Ted (I so agree with you, racheeeee...lol)
Anything to do with Gordon Ramsey (not one particular show of his)
Little Britain
The Office (only bits and pieces here and there but the few are quite funny!)

U.S.
The Office
Various silly shows involving the cast of Jackass
Chapelle Show
Seinfeld

Hmm..I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any right now.  :)

No way!  The British version is much better, IMHO.

Agreed. The film company may be US based, but the mindset of the film is totally not American.

Absolutely!! While it's still pretty funny, the US version misses out on the subtleties of the British one.

I don't watch a lot of TV so rather than doing tv shows, I'll go with proper comics instead...

American

Nick Swardson, Patton Oswalt, Michael Ian Black, Dave Attell

British

Dylan Moran, Frankie Boyle, Eddie Izzard, Jimmy Carr
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.
