How have I missed this thread?!! I'm going to have to go back and read through all 10 pages now...
when I finally found a copy of Busman's Honeymoon (last in the series) I almost died smiling. But Gaudy Night is my favorite by far.
I absolutely agree! In fact, rereading
Gaudy Night is what started me thinking about looking for a job in the UK--and here I am!
Have you come across Jill Paton Walsh's continuations?
Thrones, Dominations is based on work by Sayers, I don't know how much, and it's surprisingly good, although I don't recommend reading it immediately after being engrossed in
Gaudy Night.
A Presumption of Death is not quite as nice, but still good fun.
I know I'll probably sound like a total dork saying this, but my absolute favorite book of all time is Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising, closely followed by the fifth book in the set, Silver on the Tree. Ever since I was seven I've been a little bit in love with Will Stanton.
Meg, I was crazy about those as a child, and I reread a year or so ago and they were still brilliant! I'm seriously thinking about planning a holiday (pilgrimage?) to that bit of Wales. Wanna come?
As for my all-time favorite book, I waffle between two by Connie Willis:
To Say Nothing of the Dog and
Bellwether. The latter is the best novel about science and scientists I've ever read--rereading it about twice a year is what got me through my PhD. The first is just hilarious, outrageous, intelligent fun.
Just when I thought I was done, along comes this one:
Has anyone read the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde...BRILLIANT!
Funniest thing I've read in ages! There's a new one coming out this summer and I can't WAIT!
