I loved Dr Seuss too -- the butter battle one, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who...I played the word 'Yawp' in Scrabble with DH last weekend.  He disputed that Yawp is a word and much to his chagrin -- it IS an acceptable Scrabble word.  (Triple word score too with lotsa points for Y, W and P -- smokin'!)  I couldn't thank Horton Hears a Who, Dr Seuss (and Walt Whitman too) enough for adding that word to my vocabulary!  Hubs just rolled his eyes at me when I told that I knew it was a word 'cause it was in Horton Hears a Who. :P
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

Brian Aldiss - Helliconia trilogy

Douglas Adams - HHGTTG

Arthur C Clarke - A Fall of Moondust, 2001

Frank Herbert - The White Plague

HG Wells - War of the Worlds

John Wyndham - The Day of the Triffids, The Midwich Cuckoos

My introduction to ACC, I had never heard of him before. Some book- it was ace! Did he have a vision into the future or what?
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

One of my favorites is still The Alchemist by Paul Coelho.  It's a short read but very inspirational.

I went to the same science camp in 6th grade Jen!  First time I saw a banana slug too! :P

The Lorax and The Giving Tree are in my book library.  Rich had never heard of Shel Silverstein, so I read him the book over the phone and we both cried!  Its one of the sweetest books, and I loved Where the Sidewalk Ends.  ;D

The last one is my favourite. But a lot of people (including Aldiss) seem to prefer the second book.
