Movies TO rent
« on: July 20, 2008, 11:36:37 AM »
Since we have a movies not to rent thread, I thought we should have a movies TO rent thread. :)

I'll start with Adrienne Shelly's movie Waitress:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473308/ [nofollow]

Definitely NOT for everyone, though. From the description, it looks like it's just a romantic comedy but it's more than that. Very "indie" so, like Juno, some will love it & some will hate it (I loved Juno). Very much a "chick" indie flick as well. I really enjoyed it. So sad that Adrienne Shelly was murdered just after this movie...

DH and I loved "The Lives of Others".  Its in German, so if you don't speak German or don't like reading subtitles it may not be for you.

In one day, my two movies from Netflix were The TV Set and Californication.

They both were very cool for different reasons.  I will probably have a problem with the way Californication Season 1 ends (if it doesn't turn out to be a dream sequence   ;D)
but it was cool up until the last 30 seconds.   :P
...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

Gettin' Square - a little Aussie film with David Wenham (Faramir in LOTR, 300, Van Helsing) like you've never seen him before.  Also Timothy Spall.

HI.LARIOUS.
Hollywood, CA -> London, UK 2004
London, UK -> Long Beach, CA 2007

I rented 'Dan in real life' a little while ago, and I loved it. I think Steve Carell is brilliant and he was terrific in this.

There's a great little Scottish film called 'Dear Frankie' that I really enjoyed. All the actors give great performances, but the bonus is that Gerard Butler is VERY easy on the eyes in this movie. ;D.

My top rental picks:

- Ratatouille
- The Bourne Trilogy (I think all three films are all fantastic, and I don't typically like action films like this)
- Superbad
- Borat
- A Simple Plan
- Elf
- The Queen
- Little Miss Sunshine
- Me, You And Everyone We Know
- The Station Agent
- Sicko
- Brick
- Atonement
- Goodbye Lenin
- Shut Up and Sing
- Seinfeld, series 1-9 (I know this isn't a film, but I enjoyed working my way through the entire series using my LoveFilm membership)
- Donnie Darko
- Vanilla Sky (my all time favourite film, gets better every time I see it, which has been at least 20 times already)

I just rented 'Nim's Island' with Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin, and the luscious Gerard Butler. I thought it was cute.

Movies I've seen recently & loved:

Water
My Best Friend (sort of odd & charming French film - do try it!)
Stranger than Fiction
Japanese Story
Paris Je T'Aime (I still think about this one months later)
Cranford

And I have to say (based on discussion on the NOT to rent board) that I liked "Blades of Glory" despite myself - I nearly pissed myself during the ice skating performance scenes  :)

ETA: You can watch the trailer for My Best Friend here: http://www.tescodvdrental.com/product/detail.html?product_id=87363&auto_show_trailer=1&show_trailer=1
