UKY Book Club-Greater London Area- September 2008
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:22:42 PM »
The upcoming meeting of the UKY Book Club will discuss Cormac McCarthy's The Road.  In 2006, it won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Pulitzer in 2007.   The Road is set in post-apocalyptic rural southern America and tells the tale of a father trying to protect and provide for his young son.  A film adaptation is scheduled for release in November.

The date we've chosen is 13 September.  We've yet to pick out a place to meet, so suggestions are welcome.  This meetup/book discussion is open to all UKYankee members and their guests, and please do not think that you are not welcome if you haven't read the book.  After the discussion we usually have a more traditional meetup, so don't think you're not welcome if you're not interested in a book club.  And we'd love to have visitors from outside the London area.

Looking forward to this meeting.  The book looks to be a departure from our previous selections!

Any suggestions about where we should hold the meeting and the post meeting Get Together?

It is indeed a departure, but I've really wanted to discuss this book with people since I read it late last year.  I found it to be one of those books that I can't say was my favourites, but it definitely has stuck with me.  It's an interesting addition to one of my favourite sub-genres of literature.

Bumping the thread as reminder for the Book Club.  Info about the book is in the first post of this thread.

I would like to set up a meeting place in Central (ish) London.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I think we would be fine with a local coffee shop or pub.  Please do post if you will be joining us, so we have an idea of numbers.

There have had a lot of new people on the board in the last couple of months and I would like to encourage you to join us.  If you won't have the opportunity to read the book in time, not to worry.  We usually go to dinner after, and you are welcome to join us then.

Oh, nuts, forgot...best get to the library.

Oh, quick question...someone lent me their copy of the DVD of 'Brick Lane'.  I am ashamed to say that I can't remember who it was  :-[  Let me know, so I can return it.

Not as much as the book, but not bad!  Thanks!

Hello out there. I am new to UKY and I think this suits me! I'd like to join the book club. I see the meeting is scheduled for Sept. 13th? not sure I can make that. How often does this group meet? and where? Sounds like fun. I have never been apart of a book club before.

Sorry to hear you won't be able to make the September meeting, gfdwyer.  Our meetings tend to be around 5-6 weeks apart, so the next meeting will most likely be towards the end of October.  The meetings move around, depending on suggestions from the participants, but they are usually in central London.  Keep an eye out for a new thread the week after the next meeting, as that is when we announce the next book and meeting date.

We look forward to you joining us!

How does Patisserie Valerie in Marylebone sound for our meeting place?  Say 4:00pm?

For those who would like to do dinner after, we can decide at the meeting.  For those who don't want to participate in the book discussion, but would like some social time, you could join us around 5:30 and then join the group for dinner.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend as Baby is due around September 16. I hope to be able to "rejoin" the group for the October meeting, provided I'll have time to read the next book between feedings! Have fun!

I am still excited about eventually joining, but one again I can't make it!  The book looks great though, and I just ordered it. :)
