Monkey Bread
« on: July 22, 2008, 03:07:26 PM »
Has anyone tried to make it here without the refrigerated biscuit dough? I can get Pillsbury dinner rolls now at Asda but not the buttermilk biscuits the monkey bread recipes seem to call for.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I have tried it!  I used Bisquick, but you could easily use a from-scratch recipe too.  It didn't turn out quite the same as the monkey bread I'm used to (a bit more dry and airy), but you could probably play with the ratios and achieve a better result than I did.  Try a homemade biscuit recipe but up the wet ingredients to make your money bread more dense.  I'm wonderful if a heavy cinnamon or belgian bun type recipe might work better?

Lemme dig up the notes my mom wrote about it when I get home - it was her that concocted the "substitute" recipe in the first.

It also took me AGES to find a decent bundt pan, too!

My mom used to just make bread dough and make balls from that instead of the store bought dough.  A bit more time consuming, but if you've got a craving...

It is most yummy.  Bread dough balls rolled in butter and cinnamon sugar packed together and baked usually in a bundt pan. Then you just tear off pieces and enjoy!

That's what it is for me at least.

Yup! Yummy! Yeah, I could do the bread dough. I'm intrigued by a Bisquick type substitute though...

My mom's also made a savory version, with garlic and herbs I think. Very very yummy.

My mom always made it from scratch, too, but I've had great success making it "from scratch" in the bread machine's dough cycle, too. That way you only have to roll and coat the balls and shove it in the oven.

Oh I think I've had that - except we called it Bubble Bread.

I had never heard of it either until I lived in Pennsylvania. It was a favourite with the kids at Head Start. I haven't made it since moving here; let me know how you make out. I am sure the boys at school would love making it! They are always wanting new 'American' creations!

Just wondering if it is a regional thing in the US
