What did you do with your cheque?
« on: July 23, 2008, 08:41:08 PM »
I've just gotten my economic stimulus cheque for $300.  I didn't know I was going to get any money back from my taxes so I didn't put my bank account details or routing number on the return so it could be direct depositted. What did everyone else do with their cheques or any cheques from the USA?  I'm thinking of mailing it recorded delivery to my sister so she can put it in my US bank account, but are there any less complicated things I can do with it to get it in my US bank account? Don't really want deposit it here because of the exchange rate and fees. Thanks in advance.

I had a friend from the US visiting me when it arrived, so I just sent it back with him to take into the bank for me. I filled out a deposit slip from the back of my check book.

Usually I just send checks to my mother to deposit for me, with a deposit slip (my grandmother usually sends me a check for my birthday). I've never deposited a USD check into my UK account. It just wouldn't be worth it. We spend dollars for internet purchases (presents for people in the US particularly) and when we visit, so the money is definitely useful in that account.

I haven't gotten one!!  If I ever do, I'll save it for my trip home in September and take my folks out for a nice meal with part of it. :D

I got mine! I used it to pay for a speeding ticket (ugh!), to buy books for school, and towards paying off a hospital bill.

Originally I wanted stave it and put it all in my emergency fund. But it couldn't have come at a better time. I quit one of my jobs and then got slammed with unexpected expenses. I'm so grateful for it.

Did anyone see where they are thinking about doing a second round of them?

Thanks guys! When I get cheques from relatives for christmas and such I usually save them all and when I go home for a visit deposit them all and it gives me more spending money while Im there.  Problem is, I was just home 2 weeks ago and wont be home again for perhaps another 2 years or so  :(

Guess theres no easy way to deposit it from the UK besides mailing it to my sister.  I'll do that then.  I wish I could just call up the bank and give them the serial number of the cheque or something and they could cash it. Ahhh well. Not spending the money on anything fun anyways. Just paying off more of my student loans.  :P

Ooh, thanks to this thread I just checked my US account online and saw they deposited our tax refund!  Hooray!!  Now, where is my stimulus payment...I could really use that money right about now!  Let's hope they haven't sent us a check as well, but I guess based on bookgrl's experience they might have done.  ::)  I wish there was some way to check when it's coming!

We got a letter about it the day before the check arrived.  There is the tool on the IRS website that predicts within a month of when you will receive it.  Although, I didn't have any other refund so that might have something to do with it.

Same as bookgrl. Got a letter from the IRS saying my cheque was on its way and then the next day got the cheque.  I wasnt due any other refund either.  Ive just been to the post office and sent it to my sister recorded delivery with a letter to the bank saying it was ok for her to deposit it into my account. Hoping it arrives there safely. *fingers crossed*.  :)  For anyone wondering it cost about £4.20 to send it signed delivery to the USA in a regular business envelope.

For future reference, you should be able to send the check directly to the bank for deposit. We do it all the time and have never had a problem. Along with the signature on the back of the check, we write "For deposit only" and the account number, and include a deposit slip in the envelope.

I guess we got lucky--we put our account info on our return and they actually sent our payment electronically! :)

My sister got my cheque on thursday of last week and since she lives about 5 mins from my bank depositted it same day for me. Shes a star.  Was worried it might have been lost because it took about 2 weeks to arrive.  But I just sent the signed cheque and a letter saying it was ok for my sister to deposit it into my account and my account number and it all worked out ok.

Next year I'll have anything depositted electronically but when I did my tax return I wasnt aware i was eligible for the economic stimulus payment. Hope everyones cheques arrive soon  :)! I know theres a lot of people waiting on them

I must be very trusting - and very lucky.  I deposit checks by post on a semi-regular basis.  I never send them anything other than airmail, just sign the back of the check, fill out the deposit slip and send with a note stating I don't need a receipt - otherwise, they will send me one!  Then I just monitor my bank account on-line starting about 4 days later, and it's usually been deposited by about day five.

My $300 check is going towards student loans.  They can send me another next year if they'd llike!

Same here, nothing fun-just student loans, boo hoo... and although its helpful, it just seems like a drop in the bucket of what I owe  :-[

I thought after I sent it, is it possible for someone to cash a signed cheque if they got their hands on it? Still not sure, but luckily it arrived.
