Carnation Caramel (Dulce de Leche)
« on: July 26, 2008, 09:03:30 AM »
I know we've had a thread or two here in the past (thanks to JuneHawk) about making your own Dulce de Leche - by boiling a tin of Carnation Sweetened Condensed Milk for a long time & voilĂ  - you have Dulce de Leche - yum!

But I've just realised recently - you don't need to go to all that trouble, because Carnation now sells it as Dulce de Leche (it's called Carnation Caramel) right in the tin!  You can pick it up at the same place in the store where you'd get the tin of milk to do it.  Wow!

I bought one yesterday that I'm going to try as caramel ice cream topping (like for sundaes!), because the syrups that they sell here - I'm afraid they just don't cut it.  (And I'm going to make my own chocolate sauce!)

 ;D

I tried this stuff, but didn't like it... to me, it was far too sickly.

I've made my own before, too, and have used it to make biscuits - as a sandwichy filling. They're quite bland tasting biscuits, so a small amount of the dulce de leche doesn't seem so sickly sweet in that way.

yes, well, i suppose the sickliness could have been due to me eating it with a spoon out of the tin!   :-[

LOL! Yup, that might be it. I don't even like it on ice cream, to be honest. Too much sweetness!

We tried it - it's the real deal - Dulce de Leche.  My Brazilian friend loves to eat this stuff just by the spoonful - an extreme indulgence.

But as noted - it's very, very sweet, so a little goes a long way.  I may use the rest for a cake or something, like the one JuneHawk made & posted about a long time ago - will have to dig up the thread. :)

The chocolate sauce I made was really nice & dead easy too!

This recipe looks like the cookies I used to make (it's been years since I did it).

(Edited because that was a stupidly long URL!)

I kept thinking it would be Dulce de Leche everytime I've seen the Caramel tins in the store, but I never use it, so it'd go to waste in on our shelves here at home.   :P  I've also seen Carnation Chocolate in stores...  So what's that supposed to be then?   :-\\\\  I'm so confused.  (Should I go to confused.com?)   ;D

No idea?  The Caramel (Dulce de Leche) was really thick - just like Dulce de Leche, so I had to warm it a bit in a little cream pitcher in the microwave before it would pour as an ice cream topping.
