how and if to bring printer
« on: August 04, 2008, 04:22:58 PM »
Greetings all,

I've got a decent HP printer that can convert to UK voltage but I have no idea if it's worth it to bring.

The shippers are coming on Sept 1 - and my final flight out is Sept 24.  It's one of those items that I feel I will need up to the end (printing boarding passes) and right at the beginning of being there (CVs).

Seems silly to think about packing a printer in my suitcase! Alternatively there is the extra baggage fee.

Suggestions?  Experiences?

 :) Holly

We brought our printer but it was a tiny one that my dad got for free when he bought some monitor or something.   :P  We never had a printer before and we thought we might as well since if it broke we wouldn't mind and we just stuck it in a suitcase since it was small.  Other than the annoyance of having to use a converter when we use it,  I'm really glad we brought it.  Saved us money and we do use it a fair amount.

We bought a dual-voltage HP printer in the US specifically to bring with us to the UK, as it was less than half the price. It came on the plane with us, no problem.

Be aware, though, that HP has come up with a way of region-coding their INK CARTRIDGES (like DVDs!) and you may need to have your printer converted before it will accept UK cartridges. We spent weeks trying to get ours sorted, and they eventually just replaced it under warranty with a UK model. MAJOR hassle. :P

Which is absolutely insane, and a good reason to stick to an older model if it still does the job.  Or just get refills on your existing cartridges, if they're the type which can be refilled fairly easily.

Boy that's insane about the HP cartridges!

I brought a cannon 4 in 1 printer with me from one trip to the states, happy I did- just brought it in the box like an extra suitcase

I noticed in the local shops that they didn't carry the cartridges I need for my unit, and there were funny numbered cartridges that I hadn't seen before.  Looks like I need to stock up when I go home.
