Britain's Biggest Babies
« on: August 06, 2008, 01:20:33 PM »
Did anyone catch this on ITV last night (or when it originally ran)?  It made me feel downright skinny to see the size of some of those mums!  Interesting findings though about junk food diet in pregnancy leading to babies who crave junk food.  I suppose that means Jean will be addicted to white chocolate  ;D

I saw this program a while ago, and I thought that they were picking on a lot of larger Mom's.  They mentioned diseases that any Mom of any size can experience, I thought it was a bit scary, and felt it was targeting all thenegative aspects of pregancy towards larger Moms, never mentioning that it could happen to anyone.  Having said that I think they did make a few good points about the connection between junk food in the womb and through a child's life.

It isn't just large women who have big babies though. My neighbours grandson is 8 months olds and HUGE. His mum is down right skinny though. I have encouraged them to seek medical help though because they say he does not eat that much. It is fair to remember that not all obesity issues are about will-power.

Exactly, you just said it a bit better.

My cousins friend has a 9 month old baby and he's so heavy!...he's a big boy and his mom is smaller.

(Not gonna read the story lol)

Both my sons were over 10 lbs and I dont recall living on junk food during pregnancy - though I did put on far too much weight.....then again, they were also both 2 weeks overdue so might've weighed a lot less if they'd come on their due date.  I loved having fat buddha babies with all the rolls of fat. They were like mini sumo wrestlers. :P My youngest had to go into ICU and the nurses loved having him around next to all the 3 lb pre-mee babies..He looked about 6 months older than them.

(Now they've gone the other way and I think are on the 25%ile for weight...both far too skinny! So it doesn't necessarily mean you'll stay large...)

Yep, exactly!  My sister (now 24 yrs old) was a huge baby.  She was 7 lbs when she was born, but gained weight really quickly.  My mom used to get comments all the time, but the pediatrician kept telling her not to worry.  By the time she was 6 months or so, the largest diapers made at the time didn't fit her anymore, and my mom used to have to tape them to keep them on her.  The nurses at the doctor's office used to jokingly call her "thunder thighs".  My grandma used to complain to my mom that my sister looked like the Michelin Man and was too fat and would not learn to walk because a baby wouldn't be able to get balance carrying extra weight.  Well, she walked at 11 months and by the time she was 18 months or so she was back to a normal weight for her height/age, and she's been skinny ever since.  The lucky thing has NEVER had weight issues.  I, on the other hand, was a small kid but have been battling chubbiness since I was probably about 10 ::)

I'm 'big', my DH very thin. Our 2 year old struggles to put on weight (he's 22 lbs now). My almost 5 month old, at last month's weighing, was just shy of 18 lbs. So only 4 pounds between them! They are both perfect in my eyes!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm not sure if it's an old-wives' tale, but I have heard that big babies, if fed a reasonable actually tend to be slimmer as they grow up. Kind of along the lines of what stephanie and yankeeangel said.

I've always had a theory about that....everyone I know that was a small or premmie baby have had weight issues. I was 6lbs 1/2oz...and I've had weight problems all my life. My cousin was like over 8lbs and she's the itty bitty adult (there's other examples too) but I've always had this as a thought.  :-\\\\ I wonder if there's any studies for that

My daughter was 11 lbs., 2 oz. at birth.  She dropped to 10 lbs., 8 oz. during her 5-day stay in NICU.  I gained 25 lbs. during pregnancy and had them all off by the time she was 3 weeks old.  I had gestational diabetes and was 2 weeks overdue when she was born.  My daughter is about 5'7" and a normal weight.  Unfortunately, I've gained back the pregnancy weight and then some.   :-[

I saw that show and I thought it was a load of horsecrap. I am overweight (at least a size 20) and I gave birth to a normal sized baby. It was misleading and sensational (in my opinion)

granted, but the mother who lets her baby eat nothing but chips "because that's all she likes" needs a boot to the head.
