Indeed they were.  When they guy started running in the air, my boyfriend turned to me and said "I can hear Seb Coe and Tessa Jowell crying"!  How the hell the UK will do anything so impressive in four years time is a mystery.

That part was amazing! The whole thing was really but that part when he ran around the place and lit the torch in the air...omg such an amazing thing to watch. China went above and BEYOND...I'm wondering how or IF the Uk will match or go above that...it might turn into some sort of contest now lol who's bigger and better

I don't think the UK will probably even try to top it, just try to do something different. How can you top that?

Anyways, I think it would be great fun to be in the olympics for something a bit different, like badminton, skeetshooting, archery or handball, instead of just the typical swimming, diving, and gymnastics.  Of course, I think it would be good fun to be 1/16 as good of these athletes at any of these sports, beyond my wildest dreams!

The show was wildly impressive, the stadium remarkable, and all the athletes looked blown away. I cheer for all the teams when they come out, but I was weepy when watching Lopez Lomong carry our flag for the US team. His story made me cry when it aired here, and I'm glad that he was chosen to lead the team into the stadium.

We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the earth. Our government has no power except that granted to it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.

Meh.  I mean, sure, it's all glittery and showstoppery, but I can't help thinking about the massive amount of money wasted on silly pageantry.

I've got some sparklers left over from the Fourth.  Want me to FedEx them over?  Nothing screams crazy patriotic woman like sparklers and chanting.

Perfect.  I'll be waiting for them.  In the meantime, I'll buy a lighter. ;)

I don't mind the Olympics in general, but this one is sort of tainted for me because of the political issues involved. I know it's not meant to be about politics, but it's hard to just ignore it....  :-\\\\

I was watching this AM and there was a kid on (some kind of track and field athlete) and he was talking about his grandfather just dying and all I could think of was what a field day the US media would have with that one.  They would have gone into total maudlin overdrive.  I don't miss all the 'human interest' stuff.

I agree 100%.

It's insane and, quite frankly, unecessarily sensationalistic.  Why can't the fact that these people are the best at their given sport be enough?  Will us knowing that an athlete's great aunt was bitten on the ankle by a miniature poodle mere minutes before they flew to China make any difference whatsoever in the final results?

I can't believe I've got to put up with two weeks of this.  Oy.
