I went to John Lewis in Buchanan Gallery the other day and I about left in tears after a visit to the large appliance department. I will never have a house big enough for regular sized appliances. So flipping depressing.

While I was in Lakeland, I noticed they had Ball canning jars.

If you have a close by Polish shop, they should sell eggs. They are generally free range with a gorgeous orange yolk and cheap.

I hear ya on that. No place to put a freezer in here, and we have a large flat.  Yeah, Lakeland has Ball jars, and charge and arm and a leg for them. I found half-litre (basically) Kerr jars at the hobby shop out at Glasgow Fort for 7 pounds for a package of six jars. (I bought a lot of jars.)  I don't know if they still have them, but that's half the price of the cheapest I'd found prior to that (which was Sainsburys, who would never deliver them!)

I was actually in a Polish shop on Saturday, down by the farmer's market in Partick. Didn't look at their eggs, but got egg noodles for in chicken soup. :) When I got eggs from Tesco last week it was 15 large eggs  (free range) for about 12 pence per egg. Apparently they're not offering that anymore. Tonight I was able to order six medium free range for  15 pence per egg. So, smaller egg, slightly higher price. I'm ok with that. The caged eggs were 8 pence each. But I can't make myself do it. (I will if the free range gets too expensive, but I won't like it.) And when the farmer's market is on in Partick again in a few weeks I'll definitely check the Polish stores for eggs. Thanks for the tip!

the eggs in the Polish shop are white, too! Good for if you want to dye eggs at Easter.

Would you guys be able to get on a waiting list for a council (or HA) flat?  You might get something bigger doing that...

Spaghetti squash. I find randomly in our supermarkets this time of year, but never consistently. Same in the local farmer's markets. Hard to grow, likes a lot of heat.   Good year for it, but other years aren't good.  I have tried to grow every year since I started growing stuff and this is the first year that I have one (in my greenhouse) but it's still green. I will probably need to bring it inside soon to try and ripen indoors.

Went to the farmer's market yesterday and they were selling spaghetti squash. So one is in the oven right now, and there's a pan full of mince and sauce on the stovetop simmering. I haven't found spaghetti squash since we moved here, so I'm a happy camper today!

Was it called that?  My husband had never heard of spaghetti squash, and I had to try to explain it.  And the places I shop, I've not seen anything that might be it.

We don't have an oven now, anyway, so it's moot, but I will keep looking.  I'm certain my husband would like it.

Were they pure corn, or corn & flour mix?

I've seen both but not consistently. The corn/flour mix have been the consistent ones but the corn ones I see float in and out at random.

Made southwestern chicken soup.

Yep. They had some lovely french pumpkins (origin of variety, not imported pumpkins) that are excellent for making into soup or canning for future use. And spaghetti squash.  When the market comes around again in a few weeks  I'm going back and if they have them again I'm buying several. (They keep well.)

I have some seeds for a miniature variety, but I didn't try them this year. Since the peppers did so well in the windowsill, I think I'll start some early in the Spring and then put them on the spare windowsill and see how they do. When I used to grow them in SoCal they would not even think of doing much until the soil was quite warm.

I'm so jealous! You have a greenhouse!  ;D ;)

Where did you get the seeds?  I'd love a miniature variety.

You can cook it in a microwave. :)

I had not considered this (and I don't know why not, because we "bake" our potatoes in the microwave!)... zap power and time recommendations?
