I have my rental property still, so I'm hoping to just have the packet sent there and I'll be able to get it from my tenants. I'm still paying state taxes, so I'll definitely use that in my argument if they're not going to give it up easily!

It's definitely a state to state thing. My friend from MN just popped in and renewed hers no problem. If I recall, MD requires proof of residency unless you use this packet they send. And they won't send anything to an address different from the one stated on your license, so I can't even ask them to forward it to my parent's in PA. It's all very annoying!

Thanks for the info and advice.  Didn't realize mine was a common problem!  I lived in NJ before moving to London and the NJ DMV website says you can only renew your license in person.  I won't be going to NJ this visit but to PA where my parents live.  But I did have a look at the PA DMV website and it looks like I can meet their criteria for a new PA license if I go in person and, along with ID, bring some mail addressed to me with my parent's address and my mom to vouch for me.  Haven't had to do that since I was a teenager!  Am lucky because this works only with a valid or recently expired license from another state.  So the timing works well as my license will have just expired the month before.  It's been interesting reading the differences from state to state and other's experiences.
