What American foods do your kids miss?
« on: August 29, 2008, 11:13:24 AM »
A UK friend of mine is working on a script about a blended US-UK family, and has asked me what foods the American kids (10-18 age range) would miss in the UK. I am American but I have no kids, so I thought I'd throw the question out to the community here. Thanks in advance for any help!

I tried to get a company over here to order Little Debbies. They told me they do not import them because they have a short shelf life (in contrast I thought they lasted forever! I'd eat them anyway).

The man did say if I wanted to order in bulk, they could do it. Unfortunately at the time we lived in a small two bedroom flat and we had no space to store a crate of cakes.

I'm with your son though. Little Debbies, mmmmmmmmmmm.

If I were a kid, I'd miss dill pickles, Campbells soups, American cheese, Jif peanut butter, oreos, nutter butters, and mac and cheese. Oh, and root beer.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Combos. And Gerbers Puffs (Thank goodness my mother uses them as cushioning when she sends me packages)

We moved here when my daughter was 14 and she is now 18. There aren't too many things she still wants from USA but the following list is what she asks her grandma to send over :

Welch's Grape Jelly
Log Cabin Syrup
Apple Jacks

From Costco we keep her supplied with Skippys Peanut Butter and from Asda she gets Reeses Peanut Buter Cups

I think that is it...if I think of anymore I will add :)

Oh man, Little Debbie Christmas Tree cakes are one of my all time favorite bad for you treats.
If I were a kid, I think I'd miss grape jelly, candy like Mike and Ikes, Hot Tamales (I miss these as an adult  :\\\'( ), twizzlers, penny candy like mary janes, squirrel nut zippers, and bit of honeys, bubble tape, fruit roll ups, toaster strudels, eggo waffles, mountain dew, Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, Count Chocula, swiss cake rolls, devil dogs, funny bones, dunkaroos, peanut butter cups, whoopie pies, kool aid.

(Disclaimer, I don't know what you can and can't get here, I don't really seek most of this stuff out in actuality, besides that odd fruity pebbles craving I got about 2 months in here)
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

My daughter still misses the plain Cheerios.  You can get the nutty crunchy flavored kind in Sainsbury's but not the original garden variety.  My mother used to bring them over in her suitcase in plastic bags (bet you couldn't do that now!)  Both kids also liked the Annie's "Bernie Bunny" mac and cheese. Kid-type food I missed was apple sauce.  Not only could you serve it as an accompaniment to pork or for a quick dessert but also can be used in baking as a substitute for fat.
I used to make it from scratch of course which is yummy but doesn't have the same flexibility and convenience as the jar kind.
