Sheets? Jams?
« on: May 20, 2004, 04:42:30 PM »
Oaky the question is this.... bring US sheets or not.... we have a queen deep matress here and a queen there..... so.. do I bother or not?  Same with the blankets, duvets, quilts?

Also anyone know if you can bring or ship canned goods like jams into the UK?

I read everywhere to not even attempt to use US sheets on UK beds or visa versa....but I brought mine anyway and they work just fine!   ;D

I think Queen here is King there.  I've looked at measurements and they seem almost the same. like an inch off.  Anyone else?

I thought I'd weigh in on shipping jams and the like.  Our movers have told us that they won't move any food items due to new FDA requirements that they fill in a form describing the food item, etc.  I've packaged up all of the food gifts I have for people and am mailing them separately.  You still have to fill out the FDA forms though...there is a description of it over on the food talk board.

I know others have answered your questions about the sheets, but I have a home-made American quilt that my mum made.  It was designed for a US double bed and to go with a dust ruffle (ie, it doesn't go all the way to the floor).  Well, that quilt quite happily works on our UK king-sized bed.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Pam - just to let you know....here in Rochester we have a wonderful little candy shop on the high street which has a wall full, top to bottom, of all sorts of jams and preserves and such....you're welcome to "drop in" for a weekend any time and give it the once over!   ;)

Ahhhhh, sadly there's no shortage of lovely jams and such over here!  ;) Unless you're after grape, that's a bit harder...

Well, yes, grape is a bit *impossible* - but I have found that damson jam works just as well w/peanut butter!  ;)

I actually was never a huge grape jelly fan anyway. Mom usually did PB&J with strawberry or apricot. That said, if you can get concorde grape jam that's homemade or made by one of those small, quality producers, that's a completely different kettle of fish! Love damson jam, too!

This thread reminded me of one of the times I helped to make jam. My ex-bf got it into his head that he wanted to make peach jam. They were in high season so we went to an orchard and bought bushels of the 'cast-offs' (bruised, etc). The jam was more like peach sauce, but boy did it smell good!

It just occured to me that the smell of ripe peaches and nectarines is one that I really miss. Along with that of really ripe tomatoes and tomato plants.
