Fake meat
« on: August 31, 2008, 12:47:52 AM »
Hello hello,
I'm moving to the UK in October, and I'm having a great time thinking of the prospects of all the great British food. Scones! Curry!
Anywho, I'm a vegetarian, and in the US I eat quite a bit of fake meat products, like from Morningstar Farms or Boca. Mostly, veggie burgers, fake hamburger crumbles and fake chicken patties.
Are there many or even any British equivalents to these?
Thanks,
Katy

I'm veg, too and spent some time looking around.. they have lots of Quorn products there (we have a few available here in the states, but they have much more!!!) They are delicious! :)

I actually was wondering about soy creamer this morning. I hope I can find that over there, too...

My daughter is a vegetarian...and she doesn't like many vegetables! She relies mainly on pasta and 'fake meat'. She fines there are more options here in the UK then in the states when she visits. She likes the Quorn products the best but there are others too!

I'll be honest..the vegetarian fake meats over here aren't as good as in America.  Neither is the soy milk.

I miss Silk (remember Silk Nog?) and Moringstar as well.  Quorn isn't as nice as Moringstar :(

I agree.  It is as if they came up with a bunch of veggie options in the early '80's, deep fried sausages made out of chunks of carrot and corn, and just never bothered to do much else.

I do think eating out here is much better for veggies though.

I love Boca Brats.

I'm not veggie, but I am lactose intolerant and I totally agree that the soy milk over here is just not as good as what I'm used to in the US (although perfectly drinkable!) Definitely miss Silk. :(

I worked in a milk shake parlor and we had soy milk and/rice milk (I like biorice brand) for customers who didn't want milk, I really like rice milk, I think it's really nice actually :) For Soya,  I like that sojade brand of soya milk/cream/yoghurt, much nicer than the supermarket brands.

Ethnic supermarkets are often really good for vegetarian food, I have a vegetarian friend I cook for regularly and she loves that fresh tofu (not the cauldron kind) this kind

that you only seem to get in ethnic supermarkets, and if you see the "full of beans" tofu that's really good :)

Also Great Nineveh meals are really great

They do some great splitpea curries!

Dragonfly do nice veggie sausages and burgers etc...which aren't just an old carrot mashed up in a patty shape :)

Dang it! Do they have any kind of fake meat crumbles like boca? I love quorn, but from what I've seen it's mainly "chicken" products. Man, I use boca ground all the time (tacos, lasagne, spaghetti, pizza...) and I love the veggie burgers here.

So, I'm guessing there's no soy creamer?  :\\\'( I am not lactose intolerant but I do just really like soy milk in general. I will have to make an effort to look harder when I come in Feb.
