I'll try to look them up.. but we call them 'zap straps'.

Yep, that's what they were!

Normally carriers that have just the clips have holes where you can use those ties as well if you're worried.

I think I've found the right carrier!

It meets BA requirements in that it's

1.  Big enough for all each of my cats to be more than comfy in.
2.  Vents on all four sides, secure enough (door zip ties closed),  strong enough? I assume
3.  Door can not be opened by accident (if zip tied)
4.  No nose or paw can fit through mesh (no more than any other carrier)
5.  .....So how IS the water and food accessible from the outside anyhoo?

I feel fairly confident about this choice, but am about to pay $30 for shipping and REALLY want to avoid a D'OH moment after I click "pay".

Had too many D'OH moments lately!

thanks folks
Hb

This VariKennel is exactly the same one I used successfully to bring my cat over. It was sturdy and secure, although I also put those "zip tie" things through the provided holes around the "seam" even though they probably were not necessary -- the whole thing held together just fine, with its own metal screws covered by their plastic wingnut looking things.

It also met with complete approval by the Continental animal check in at Houston and the ARC people at Gatwick -- no complaints from the powers that be about the kennel.

I found mine at either a local Petsmart or Petco, I don't remember which, for $79.99.
