Getting married twice?
« on: September 03, 2008, 06:49:46 PM »
Does anyone know if there are any problems with getting married in the UK and then getting married again in the US shortly after? (To the same person of course.)  I've been told it'd be easier for us in the long run, if we decide to move back to the States in the future, if we have a marriage license from there.  I've also read, though I can't find it now, that California doesn't recognize foreign marriage licenses, though I have no idea why they wouldn't.  He's a UK citizen and I'm a US citizen.  Can anyone provide any info on this?  I'm afraid of getting in trouble for getting married legally twice even though in different countries, or of any issues arising when I apply for my ILR in the future or he applies for a visa if we decide to move back.

If there is an issue or if it's not any different when applying for a US spousal visa for him in the future then it's not a big deal to have a pseudo ceremony as the person who is marrying us over there is a friend and will have to get Deputy Commissioner for a day anyway.

Ok, I just read that the majority of foreign marriages are recognized by the US so that's not a problem anymore, but it'd be nice if having a California marriage certificate would make it easier in the future for my fiance getting a US spousal visa.

I'm almost sure you can't legally get married again.  You could have a ceremony but if you're already married you wouldn't get another certificate as far as I'm aware.

You can't.

I got married here legally (In the UK) and had another faux ceremony in the US.  I've never had a problem at all.  (Visa's changing my name legally with Social Security, etc)

Ok, thanks for the info.  At least I'll save money not having to pay for the one-time deputy commissioner thingie for my friend.

to the OP- not sure where you heard that having a CA or USA marriage certificate would be easier.  no problems have a US or UK one.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
