Accessing US websites
« on: September 03, 2008, 09:11:39 PM »
Ever try to access a US website only to find that it is restricted here in the UK? I've tried to listen live to my fav radio shows or stream the news channel from back home, only to see that I can not get it.
There is something you can do about it. First make sure you delete your cookies and offline data of your webbrowser (usually in tools or options). Download hotspot shield - http://hotspotshield.com/  (free!), install it. Close your webbrowser, run hotspot, wait until it tells you it's connected, then open your webbrowser again. All websites (including youtube , pandora,...) will now assume you're in the US. You will have an occasional advert and it does slow down your connection a bit, so only use it when needed.
Since downloading this, I have been able to access the sites that I could not access before!

Thank you, thank you, thank you Lisapower for this tip!  I just did the download.  I didn't even have to remove my cookies, but I am now watching the Murray-Federer championship match on-line.  Which is great because we have Virgin and don't have Sky 1 sports.

Thanks again, I know this is going to come in very handy in the future!

That is brilliant. I'm going to try when I get home. I'm always going on some website like NBC and they don't show videos they have online which is so annoying.

Thanks!

There are many anonymous proxy servers which you can use to access a website while hiding your actual IP address.

Some websites may block them, though.

Google "proxy server".

Excellent. I'm replying in this thread just to bookmark it for myself.

I was going to try proxy servers and see if I could find one that didn't slow things down too much -- I'm awfully addicted to watching TV via Hulu, and it's blocked for sure.

Good idea. Now if I can just figure it out cause it's not seeming that simple for me!

How do you know if it's connected? All I got was a zip file and nothing to say where it's connected

It's easier to just use a proxy server in the US.  No software to install, just two things to edit in Internet Explorer/Firefox.
