Yorkshire book club
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:33:00 PM »
Hello!  I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in starting a book club in the Yorkshire area.  This is obviously not JUST for people in Yorkshire-anyone can come along!  So....anyone interested?

That's great!!  Any ideas on books?  Reading Lolita in Tehran?  or The Lemon Tree?  or anything?

June, when are you getting here-in September or has that date been changed?

I'd be interested, but I am rarely on UK-Y at the moment and most of my reading for the last five years has been restricted to academic stuff. So I have 'reading for pleasure' fatigue.

My plan was to be there on September 24th but I think that was too optimistic and it will take another two weeks possibly.
But don't wait on me!  Just let me know which book you choose, I can catch up.   :)

June where in Yorkshire are you coming to?  It's so great we are getting more and more UK-Yers in our area!  :)

To answer for June, I am pretty sure she is moving to Harrogate :)  Please correct me if I am wrong!  And I would say we should shoot for having our first meeting in October, say the 17th, 18th, or 19th?  Just a random weekend that I chose-does this work for everyone?

mapleleafgirl72, join whenever you'd like :)  It would be great to have you along, even if you don't always read the book   ::)

the 17th or 19th would work for me.  Not the 18th though--I am starting a drama class in two weeks that runs for 13 Thursdays....I have no idea what to expect!

a drama class?  that sounds like so much fun!!  you'll have to tell me all about it!  The dates I was talking about were in October though, so that would have the 18th as a Saturday :)  If we could get together sooner, that would be great as well!

I am presently unsure of the Oct 16-20 period because DH's birthday is Oct 16 & we might be going away for the weekend, but then again we might not.  But don't hold anything up for me.  Other dates that are out for me in October are Oct 10, and Oct 30-31.  My Oct diary is otherwise open/flexible at this time (I'm at work Tuesdays through Thursdays during normal business hours).

Just wanted to say that I understand when people say 'depending on the books', cos I tend to be picky about what I read - like I want to read what I want to read, right?  But I can already do that right now!  Lol!  My concept of a book club is that it gives you the opportunity to be exposed to perhaps other genres, others' taste in books, etc - widening your horizons (plus the social aspect!) & maybe you find new favorites, something you hadn't considered previously, or maybe just confirming you don't like this or that for reading.  Plus it's not like in school - there won't be a test & grades handed out on what you got out of the book or even that you read it at all!  Hee hee.

That's great!!  Any ideas on books?  Reading Lolita in Tehran?  or The Lemon Tree?  or anything?

How about you select the first book, swelch2, since you are organising the group?

Following...my idea of what I would like to see (but of course depending on what the group wants), is that each participant gets to choose a book.  So for instance, swelch2 could 'tag team' the next one to choose the book after her.  Or we could write down each of our book selections at the first meeting & draw them out of a hat to determine the order, or something like that?

Unless people are thinking of reading in a particular genre, but I'd prefer to keep it kind of open.  Those are my thoughts anyway.  What do others think?  :)

I like the that idea :)  Either works for me really!  Perhaps if we do the hat idea, we can just determine the order of the people and not their books.  I know that my books choices would probably change before it got to me :)

As for the date, is anyone else unable to come in October?  I don't know how long it takes each person to read a book so that is why I am going to throw some different dates out there-October 3-5, October 17-19, or November 1-2.  I think weekends are better because you don't have to think about getting somewhere after work BUT if that doesn't work for ya'll, I am willing to try the weeknight get togethers :)

The book-how about "Petite Anglaise'.
It seems like it would be funny and an easy read :)

So let's just pick the date and where we will meet and we are off!  Thanks ya'll :)
