I'm not trying to be a penance, really I'm not, but now I'm curious about what a snibber is too?  :)

... that it's cheaper to go in person and get a US passport renewed (expedited!same-day!) than it is to get a regularly-issued British passport. Who would have known?  :P

Snubber, not snibber. That's what I learned! It's the spring thing that stops a door from slamming. You've probably seen them on screen doors in the US.  :)

Childrens glasses should always be free on the NHS - up to the age of 18/19, I believe (in line with eligibility for free prescriptions). The opticians should have a range of free frames that you can choose from. but if you don't like the ones on offer, you can pay for some from the priced selection. I got free NHS glasses until I was about 16, but started paying for them after that because the free selection was kind of dire (think big 80's-style plastic pink or blue frames) :P!

Spec savers will let you put the vouchers towards the price of more expensive ones.  :)

Ah, I can see how snubber sort of makes sense.  :) Snibber is a cuter word though isn't it?  :D

North of the border, we always say 'put the door on the snib' to mean pushing the little button that disables the lock on a door that will (normally) automatically lock behind you when it's closed.  You'd use it when you want to shut one of these types of doors, but not lock it.

And as i work in facilities, that thing on the door that stops it slamming shut, we call a DCM (door closing mechanism)!

Now that would explain a lot. Must tell Geeta, because this one had us baffled.

Red Velvet cake mix didn't last a year like I thought it did.  :( It's a good thing I learned about a Walmart a couple of towns away that sells it!

In electronics we sometimes use a couple of components wired together into what's called a "snubber network."   It's used to suppress an unwanted or undesirable transient or pulse.  You can see the similar origin.

that 'When I Kissed The Teacher' is an Abba song!
I'd only ever heard it at a Trash Can Sinatras concert, and i figured it was a cover, but had no idea who'd done it originally till it popped up on the ipod of someone at work yesterday!
