Ideas for a Girlie Trip away - Cheap!
« on: September 10, 2008, 01:45:06 PM »
Me, My Sister and My Sister in Law have all decided that we'd like to take a wee trip away somewhere.  (This is because the husbands are all off cycling around Mull for a week!).

So, we started planning and I suggested a trip to London to see a show, but apparently that's too expensive (£180).  The only other thing that was suggested was a Spa weekend which I'm not too keen on.

I wondered if anybody had any suggestions?  Anything costing around £150 or less would be ideal.

Thanks!  ;D

Why don't you set off from foot there in Glasgow on the West Highland Way/ Maybe not what you were expecting for a 'girlie trip', but you could have a ton of fun.

What sort of things do you like? Maybe a concert or show somewhere that's less expensive than in London? Or an art or museum exhibit? A zoo? Something outdoorsy?

Not sure how much it'd cost, but how about embracing the CHEESE (credit mapleleafgirl72) and heading for Blackpool?!  :)

The Illuminations are on until November 2nd, and plus you could go here.  There's a show for you!  ;D

I tend to think it'd be cheaper than London, plus it's up north.  ;) :D

London does not have to be that expensive.  Have a look at www.wherecanwego.com  and enter details for London and then click free things only and all sorts of stuff comes up - Depending on how adventurous you are..Help the aged are looking for people who are interested in doing free skydives for charity  ;)

also there are cheap hotels www.easyhotel.co.uk ( might be easyhotels ) and we recently went to a Chemical Brothers Concert and stayed at a hotel in Earls Court right next top the tube station called Exhibition Court Hotel 4 - it was 50 quid a room rather than per person.  I emphasise NOT somewhere for a romantic weekend! but if you want somewhere clean to crash..then its ok..very groovy...old bed throws but the bed linen and sheets themselves are crispy white a clean.  Bathroom was clean too.

Stay away from hotels that are just called Hotel 60, Hotel 88 ect - They are hovels and they stink..their pictures look fab and the prices are cheap..but seriously they are rotten.  At least with Exhibition Court Hotel 4 you get what you see....Old fashioned and groovy but CLEAN!

Also all the museums are free in London and I believe you can do a rice boat trip for about 7 quid down the thames.
===================================

On a side note other than London, what about camping on the coast or renting a little holiday cottage for a week?  Chill out and have girlie time.

Maybe do a search on which cities have Etap hotels... they are basic, but clean, and only £32 a night, not per person.  (at least the one i stayed in was £32...)  Each room sleeps 3 (a double bed with a bunk above!)  Not great for a romantic break, but if you just need a place to lay your head...

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.  The west highland way is far too much like hard work for us though  ;D

You know, I've never been to Blackpool!  That might be a good option.

We're talking about some time in January probably.  There doesn't have to be activities as such as long as there's a nice meal, lots of drinks, a bit of dancing and an overnight stay.

Thanks again, this gives me a good start for my frantic research!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I've heard really good reviews of that drag club, and I think it'd satisfy the 'lots of drinks' and 'bit of dancing' criteria that you have.  :D

personally I'd give Blackpool a miss, ok to see the illuminations if your passing through but apart from that it's pretty grim unless your on a stag or hen night. Sit on the seafront and people watch for a while and you get the impression its inhabitants come from a very limited gene pool....... :-X

what about Newcastle - meant to be one of the best partying towns in the UK?

Some girlfriends from bonnie Scotland have talked me into a girl-trip to the Lakes District. We'll overnight at a B&B, and do some hiking, walking about really lovely villages, that sort of thing. Low-key but beautiful. If it sounds interesting, PM me your email and I'lll see if I can forward their email to me that described the Lakes District.

Other ideas:
Same idea, but visit one of the Isles. I've heard terrific things about Arran. I think you get the ferry from Wemyss Bay, which is a mere 40 minutes and £5.45 (each way) from Glasgow central on the rail service.

St Andrews is a (long) bus ride away, but a nice place. Plus lots of little villages to explore in the East Neuk of Fife.

Brighton is brilliant! Stay in a guest house or B&B in Kemptown. Avalon is great and the 3 of you can share a room, but there are plenty of cheaper places and some travel inns or hostels (st chirstopher's inn and one by the station I can't remember what it's called)  if you're on a serious budget

Good shopping, good clubs, nice bars, see a show if you want to

and dance the night away here - It's a real mixed crowd downstairs and you wont feel out of place no matter what you're wearing, how old/young you are etc and the live bands are fun and funky and everyone dances and it's a great laugh

A few years ago my company took everyone to Paris to see Madonna, we bought tickets from a tour company and the price (it was around £200 at the time, maybe 5 years ago) included airfare, hotel and tickets to the concert. It was a heck of a lot of fun and it was really affordable! The following year they took us all to Dublin, that wasn't as much fun!

Paris would be fantastic and I've always wanted to go to Brighton too!
