Sorry to post another topic, but I had some questions & found some answers I wanted to share. I did read through the shipping stuff here. I guess I am inpatient wiht gettin answers back from shipping companies. Please feel free to correct me if you have expierenced differently.
Quick background....I (American) moved to England (moved with nothing), now we hubby (english) & I are moving from Portsmouth, England to Southern California. We are moving very little amount. Only furniture I would like to take is dinningroom table & 4 chairs, small 1 drawer desk, small 2 drawer sideboard and less than 25 boxes. Mind you that depends on the cost on the quotes I get back. Which from what i have read on posts here wont be too much. Since being here in England Jan 2003, in the last 2 yrs I have slowly been taking small and bulky non value things back in my luggage.
I figured out I wont save money by shipping only to New York and moving the rest of the way by moving truck to Cali. Penske truck NY to Cali is $1,300 by the way. Plus over $600 in gas. I thought maybe by avoding the shipment going through the expensive fee for the Panama Canal would offset or be cheaper.
I know my hubbys expensive large guitar collection will have to travel on the plane with us at a large cost. Because shipments are exposed to extreme tempature change and moisture changes.
Oh and I learned in past if you take 2 guitars in thier cases, strap together wont count as one piece of luggage on a plane, because they arent in one container/bag and could become seperated to easily. So you need to put a duffle bag around it to count as one piece. But then again such a duffle bag that size doesnt exisist or would cost an arm leg and few other body parts, lol. I will be buying fabric and sewing I think, lol.
Oh and you can travel on a frighter with your goods. Im not doing that, cause they dont take pets on board, lol. Plus its a very longgggggg trip and not much ship board activities, lol.
Can shipments from England go out of Southampton? Im like 20 mins from there. Is there the option in England to deliver goods yourself to the dock and save money, like in the USA? Sorry I guess I should just email all the shipping companies these questions.
I hope I provided something of use
