us IUD time frame

hi there,
hopefully ive not missed a post addressing this.my form of birth control is the IUD which i am told by my us doctor can remain in for 12 years..i was told here though that it should be in for 5 years so me being on my 5th year with it they would like me to get it changed asap-anyone know anything about this???
any thoughts would be appreciated!!

It's 5 years for the Mirena IUS, 10 years for an IUD, AFAIK.

Google can help you if you know which one you have.

thanks for that!i was actually just thinking if anyone had any personal feelings on the difference between US and UK times...who to listen to etc...how people feel.after living in europe and the states and now here i find medical stuff very confusing as everyone sais something different!!!
