It was half joke, half serious. I grew up in Long Beach, and lived and went to school in bad neighbourhoods of it. So Friday does have something truthful about those areas.

Gotcha.  Ah, good ol' Long Beach.

This Is England (2006)

I am bias, i am a fan of Shane Meadow's work...this is a great piece of film making.

I like how it portrays the skinhead fashion and its love of ska and reggae, the 80s fashion and images of england in it's drabness. The footage used at the beginning and during the film, i remember seeing when i was growing up then.

The politically racist view of the BNP and it's relation with the skinhead culture, which is shown in the character played by Stephen Graham and his irrational nationalism, racism and his sociopathical personality, as he tries to indoctrinate a gang of friends.

The film also portrays the kinship of a teenage fashion in a gang, as a positive 'rites of passage' for the young boy Shaun.

I have to say, I thought this was one of the worst movies in recent years. Besides being little more than a masturbatory, self-congratulatory 'new take' on the coming of age story, it had such bad plotting it was incredible. Add to that some general inaccuracies and it was a movie that we felt obliged to finish watching, having been excited about it, and hoping it might suddenly become better.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

Wow.  I also thought it was a VERY good film, and I am really looking forward to seeing 'Summers Town'.

I am getting dragged to this by my mum over the next few weeks...I'll let you know.  I liked the book, lots of political intrigue, but my guess is the film will be all romance and posh frocks.

I was not planning on seeing it but did last weekend and liked it MUCH better than I thought I would.  It's a bit of a 'typical' Brit film, but, she was quite a character, and what a life!
The acting is superb, and I found it surprisingly more interesting than 'romance and posh frocks' ;) (poor girl didn't have much romance at all, but hey, those frocks were pretty impressive!)
