I liked the first part enough to tune in again next week. But I have to say that I cannot stand Gemma Arterton's voice. Ugh. She sounds like she's five years old half the time. Ruth Jones is fabulous, though, as she is in everything she does.

OK, I'm glad I'm not the only one!  I thought the same exact thing.

I could not place Ruth Jones for a minute, then it hit me!!!!  I LOVE HER!!!!!

I have to say, I've never read this Hardy novel and I was REALLY shocked!!!!

Hardy is just grim reading....but Jude the Obscure has to be the most shocking :-X (especially if you're a parent.)

Far from the Madding Crowd is a great book but it lulls you into a false sense of security as far as Hardy is concerned,  it's the only one of his books that I can think of that has a semi-happy ending!   :P

That's intriguing!  :)

I wasn't a parent when I read it, but I cried.  It's definitely not a book to read if you're feeling down.

No, it doesn't. Far from the Madding Crowd has a less than depressing ending.

i dont think they were saying that Tess has a happy ending... they said that Far From The Madding Crowd does, though... relative to other Hardy books!

Anyone care to comment on episode 2?  I liked it a little better, I think, but DH fell asleep in the middle of it.

It was made into a film with Christopher Eccleston, Kate Winslet and Rachel Griffiths.
I remember seeing the film version of Tess many years ago and being very depressed at the end of it... and after seeing Jude, I nearly wanted to take my own life.
Guess I won't be reading Hardy anytime soon!

That was a good film. I remember watching the BBC version with Robert Powell way back in school and wanting to take my own life.... Having said that, I've read most Hardy because I like the dark stuff.

I liked episode two but the Angel has no Angel face.....he just looks too young and not that much of a catch.
