Where do you get your coffee?
« on: September 22, 2008, 10:33:28 AM »
I do not currently have a grinder, although that is on top of my list of UK appliances to get.  However, I am looking for answers for either pre-ground or bean.

Right now, we drink Union Hand-roasted (Ethiopian Yirgacheffe) if we're near a shop that sells it, or we buy Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Ethiopian (which isn't fair trade from what I can see).  Although I quite like the Union roast, and I don't mind the Sainsbury one, I have not found the sort of flavour (I guess umami) I love in coffee.  Don't get me wrong, I like the ones I have found, and they especially have a wonderful aroma and a nice taste, they just don't have the same complexity I like.  I used to drink my coffee black because I love the tastes of really good coffee that much.  I only started drinking it with milk when I couldn't afford anything but really cheap Folgers.

So I am interested in where you guys get your coffee and if you have advice on companies to order from if we go down the mail order route.

I buy coffee here:

I like a strong espresso and usually get the organic Bolivian or the Brazilian Santos. The shop is in Soho and you can order online

* huge, sharp intake of breath!!!* Flavoured!!! I have been JONESING for the hazlenut flavoured ground coffee I drank in the US, but thought I'd have to just give up on ever finding some here.

I know this was someone else's question but thank you, you've made an additional person very happy too!  :D

Awww! Your welcome! And there are soooooo many flavours on there.  I usually get about £25 worth of coffee from there about every 4 months and i make a pot every morning. Whenever Ive ordered as well, they usually put my order in the box with a load of free sample goodies. Some coffee samples, tea bags, espresso.  :)

Thanks! I think I am going to try both of them.  I am not a huge flavoured coffee fan, but I sort of got into them when I had one of those horrible Senseo machines (sorry to anyone who likes them).  I couldn't drink their unflavoured pods, so I used to buy the flavoured ones.  I was just thinking this morning I could go for hazelnut or french vanilla.

I absolutely hate flavoured coffee - it's strong and black or nothin' for me!! I actually import our coffee from the US 'cause I can't find anything I like better here. I'm a Peetnick: http://www.peets.com/peetniks/peetniks.asp

I get 2 pounds a month and with shipping it ends up being somewhere around £25 per delivery (though with the exchange rate not working as much in our favour it's going up a bit now so probably closer to £30). It's one of my biggest luxuries - I couldn't get by without my morning cuppa!  :D

Ah well, more for us!  ;) :P

Flavoured coffee doesn't have to necessarily be "not strong," although I can see how a fan of truly hardcore coffee would not care for flavoured for a number of reasons.

I'm not a hardcore coffee person by any means; I commit an even greater crime than hazelnut flavour -- I pile in some flavoured creamers also!  ;D What I wind up with, and what I prefer to drink, is probably hardly categorizable as coffee anymore, I fully admit, but there you go -- and it's still better than instant.... :-X

I just like that tastily fragrant one mug of my concoction to kick me off in the morning.

I just go with what's at the supermarket. Some of the Tesco limited edition ones are nice, and Good African or Cafe Direct are usually good. The main thing is to buy ones that are specific regions, not the 'medium roast' kinds.

There's also a lot less concern over things being 100% arabica, so you do need to check labels to make sure there's no robusta in there.

I might check out the mail order route, though. I have missed an occasional cup of flavoured coffee. Not sure if Adam will like it for the morning pot, but guess I'll find out!
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

That's what I do too.  I don't drink too many flavoured coffees, but every once in a while, I crave some. At this time of year in the states, I used to get pumpkin spice coffee and later on in the year, gingebread flavoured coffee, all so good and no need to use those chemical filled fake creamers.  I will have to check out the internet websites.

Yeah, my flavoured coffee forays are very occassional and I always buy regional and arabica unless there's a good reason (we're broke or there's nothing on offer).  I suspect the Sainsbury's one isn't 100% Arabica, but I don't detect the robusta taste in it either.

I considered Peets, but I don't think Mr. Akimbo will be up to my justifications for anything like that.  Maybe someday when our ship comes in.  ;D

Oh, I realize those creamers are no good for me. But honestly, there is so much crap I probably ingest, not to mention having been exposed to toxic chemicals in a work-related environment for years, that to indulge in a fake creamer is but a fraction of the unhealthy stuff. I do my fair share of "healthy" too, so it all evens out in the end.

My, there is an awful lot of covert criticism of other people's personal tastes around this site! Sharing differing opinions is fine, but a very faint tone of putting someone down seems to happen a wee bit around here....

I'm sorry!! I didn't mean to put you down at all! I didn't mean for that to come across like that!!  I was just saying that I personally don't like to use the creamers because of the chemicals. In my past life I have used them and they sure do make coffee taste good. However, I am on a personal mission to use as much natural, whole, and local foods as possible.  I didn't mean it to come across as a bash to your personal choice.  Sorry Midnights_Mom, really I meant no offence at all.

Nor did I! But I am outspoken in my opinion when I feel strongly about something and weirdly enough, coffee is something I take quite seriously.  :P

I used to like flavoured coffees when I was younger, but I kind of lost the taste for them at some point over the years -  preferring just the coffee taste on its own.  (I add milk & sweetener though.)  I might get a flavoured something-or-other once a year from Starbucks.

Anyway, we buy our coffee (pre-ground because I'm too lazy to faff about with grinding beans on a morning) from Morrisons, but it's this range/brand.  We probably go through 2-3 packages of it a month.
