Scariest Movies of All Time!
« on: September 22, 2008, 08:18:06 PM »
What are they - for you?  :D

Just thinking about Halloween coming & I might buy a few DVDs (not something I normally do) just to have a few scary movies on hand for this time of year, but they'd have to be classics for me to part with the cash like that.  Something that'll make DH and I cower, holding each other under the blankie on the sofa, in sheer terror!  ;)

I'm more a fan of old timey stuff - like Psycho, for instance, rather than the more modern style gore-fests.  Although I do like the first Halloween.

Do you have a Top 5 or Top 10 Scariest Movies of All Time?!
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

- from Anthem, by Leonard Cohen (b 1934)

Don't Look Now

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069995/

I never liked that film, I just found it sort of boring.  I do like the Wicker Man, cheesy but still shocking.

This film always gives me the Heebie Jeebies...Saw it as a kid and hated all Dolly's ever since!

DOLLY MUST DIE!!  [smiley=behead.gif] All dolly films make me hide under the duvet!

Also any films based on "True Stories" Dahmer, Monster, Nightstalker, Ted Bundy...

But the ultimate goriest, grimmest, horrific film I ever saw was a Austrailian film called "Braindead"  Freakish dumb plot film...slightly B movie..crap acting...but the Gore was beyond belief! so much so that it has dampened the effects of any horror film I have watched since.....

The film "the cell" and the "wormy wormy" scene makes the tummy churn..

But you can never beat watching "Carry on Screaming" at Halloween....its funny...cheesy...and light hearted fun  ;)

I know it has nothing to do with Halloween but number one on my list of scary movies is Jaws followed closely by Arachnophobia.

The Shining.  Heeere's Johnny!  That movie still freaks me out and has ruined any movie with Jack Nicholson for me.  I just keep waiting for him to try to kill someone.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre. My ex-British BF and my best friend's husband talked us into seeing that instead of Elf because it wouldn't be "that scary" About 20 mins into it she and I both got up, walked out, and left them in there to watch it.

Seconded!  There are few things more horrifying than watching a perfectly normal (ha!) man go insane in front of your eyes.

While it's almost quaint now, Poltergeist scared the bejeezus out of me when it first came out.

Agree on both counts... and on the first Halloween.

Also, again not sure if it's too outdated now, but at the time, When A Stranger Calls (the original, with Carol Kane and Charles Durning) scared the life out of me as well.

For old classics, I am not well versed, but I remember Rebecca being a bit creepy (the housekeeper?), and I've always heard that Gaslight (1944), while not traditionally 'scary' per se, is a real mind... um, bender.

I thought Cloverfield was authentically shocking and spooky, if you can stand the shakey camera work!

...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

How could I forget Vertigo?!?  That one screwed with my head for DAYS.

Oh, and An American Werewolf in London assured I never went out after dark for most of seventh grade.

Wow, I'm old!

Definitely some scary moments, but I always think of it as a comedy first!  That's one of my Top 10 of ALL TIME favorites!  I adore that film.

Zombie movies scare the crap out of me! But I also have a stupid fear of zombies like for real! I don't like looking out dark windows at night because I half expect a zombie to throw himself at it! LOL

So for me my scariest are 28 Days Later and the remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Event Horizon is pretty scary too...gave me nightmares.

There are a lot of great Japanese movies that are freeeaky! Try the Japanese versions of The Ring, The Eye and Dark Water. I think they're much scary than the remakes.
