Alien is one of the scariest I've ever seen, but I'm a complete chicken.  Dh says if you want to be totally freaked out, get something Asian.  Japanese filmmakers seem to make the best horror films.  The only one I've seen is The Ring (the Americanized version) and it wasn't that scary.

Dh says "Audition" is the scariest he's ever seen.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Gremlins!! I was shocked when I saw it was a comedy at Blockbuster because that was the scariest movie for me when I was little!

I don't like scary movie much, but I had a date bring me to see Saw instead of Ray, like we'd agreed on, and that was terrifying to me!

Definitely some scary moments, but I always think of it as a comedy first!  That's one of my Top 10 of ALL TIME favorites!  I adore that film.

Take into consideration that I saw it when I was twelve (on a rented Betamax, no less!).  I have a feeling most of the comedy was overshadowed by the complete freak-out I had about werewolves hiding in dark corners.

Now, though?  Freakin' hilarious. ;D

Of course.  Which means I'm older than you're "I'm old" ;)
I saw it in the theater in London, just off Piccadilly Circus, for my 18th birthday, which was awesome  :D  I was looking for the monster as we left the theater.

THE EXCORCIST!!

I have to say The Exorcist did my head in when i first saw it, and i've never really recovered!   I think films about devils and demons are scarier than just about anything else!

scariest film ever: 'close encounters of the third kind'.

i'm home alone with the bairn right now, and just typing the title makes me want to not be home alone.  :-[

second spookiest: 'the others'.

I have to vote for 'The Event Horizon'...gives me nightmares everytime I watch it. But, then so does 'Shaun of the Dead' what's up with that?

I wouldn't say it's scary so much as disgusting.  The original Ju-On/The Grudge is pretty scary.

I watched "The Orphanage" recently. That was pretty good and scary... in a sort of "The Others" way.

My plan is to watch "The Descent" on Halloween. I've heard it's pretty scary (though probably does have some gore) and very intense if you are claustrophobic.

Yes, I put Audition on the 'disturbing' Japanese movies list. Along with Battle Royale and Suicide Club. I like them all but they're not for everyone.

Gaslight (1944), while not traditionally 'scary' per se, is a real mind... um, bender.

That's my mom's scariest movie. It is really excellent.

I'm not really freaked out by scary movies, but I loved The Omen and the Exorcist when I was a kid and saw them very young. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original, freaked me out just because the low quality made it seem like it was filmed on a super 8 and seemed really realistic.

Oh I will have to check into that Gaslight - it looks promising!

Some of the Hitchcock films - like Vertigo and Rebecca - they're great, but I think of them as more suspense thrillers than horror so much, unlike Psycho.

The Shining - definitely!  I really think it's almost too scary!  The Descent scared the crap out of me - but I think some people thought it was ridiculous - it's just that claustrophobic (in the cave) thing plus the horror bits got to me.

I think I have seen Don't Look Now before but I don't remember much about it.

I've seen The Ring & maybe some other Japanese or Japanese-inspired films, but felt kind of 'eh' about them.

I love zombie movies!  But I've not seen a lot of the newer ones (have seen 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later).  My favourite is still that great old classic Night of the Living Dead - purely for the cheeese factor & only one of the greatest movie lines ever:  'Yeah - they're dead.  They're all messed up!'  ;D

Also I do like the old Universal Studios monster movies, and some of those cheesy old vampire flicks that used to be on television all the time back in the 70s.  :)
