First lesson
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:20:11 PM »
Dunno how you guys do it.  I've driven a manual before so that's not the issue.  Had my first lesson today, too many bad habits.  The real annoying thing is the mirror signal mirror crap.  Guess I need to practice tomorrow on my drive to work.  And here I thought I was going to be ok with 3 lessons or less.

You've just got to let go, and get rid of any thoughts that 'you know better'.

Yeah, i thought some of that stuff was stupid as well, but you're unlikely to pass the test if you don't get over it and just do it the way they want you to do it.  :)

Sage advice!!!

I couldn't get the reversing around a corner maneuver in my head. I just over thought it. Once I let go ,life was golden!

Mirror Signal Maneuver. Mirror Signal Maneuver.  That's why lessons are important- to get rid of the bad habits so you can pass again, not to teach you how to drive.  Good luck nc73!

I just had my first lesson today as well  :)

The one thing that was quite satisfying was when I got into the car with my husband after the lesson, and he started to correct me on something--I told him to stop correcting me, because some of the things he had been telling me to do were wrong!

I don't even know how to let go, but I'll try!  The thing that bugged me was the speed he wanted me to go around bends.  30 around a bend is just too slow for a 60 mph road.  I'm usually doing 50  ;D

Speed was my problem too. He had me practically crawling up to roundabouts by the end of the lesson.

You have to remember learners (real ones, not us!) like to speed but they don't know how to judge cars like experienced drivers do. That's why they yell at us for the speed, because we have to pretend we don't know how to drive and have to use mirrors a lot to "judge" other drivers.
Its not fun to take lessons even though my instructor was super-nice.

I had that issue as well, along with coasting and not checking my mirrors enough!

Just look in your mirror before you do anything at all.. before you set off, signal, turn, pull out... literally, anything. Mirrors were the hardest thing for me to learn as well.  Don't feel bad about the speed thing... I got minors on my test for going to slow and going to fast and still passed. Just keep to the limit.  Best of luck  :)

Thats why I failed my test first time around, too many bad habits.

Remember you are learning to pass a test, its not like real driving.

Yeah trying my hardest.  I also have the problem of NEVER remembering to use the handbrake release when engaging the ebrakes.  Old habits die hard.

They always say Driving so you pass your test and driving on the roads on your own are two worlds apart.

Absolutely. If people did maneuvers as slow in real life as you are forced to do in lessons and on the test, the country would grind to a halt!
