What can I bake out of these ingredients??
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:45:14 PM »
I have.......

Tons of plain flour
loads of self raising flour
Sultanas
Caster Sugar
Baking Powder...
Butter
Milk
Loads of spices and flavourings..

NO EGGS  :-\\\\

I am trying to avoid eggs for a bit as they make me a little poorly if I eat too many..so I want baking ideas not involving them....

Also, if you have apples to hand that would make a good combo. You can also substitute yogurt for oil or butter in some recipes and get a really moist cake.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Scones!

This is my default scone recipe. Add sultanas, spices, flavourings, whatever to taste.  :)

Biscuits! (Okay, those are basically American scones). Pot stickers (aka Peking ravioli aka Chinese dumplings), if you  have some kind of filling. Dumplings, if you have some chicken. Or curry.

Oof! I'm hungry.

Thanx ladies...I will get baking this weekend.

I am desperate to use up my plain flour mainly.  I seem to have a obsession with buying it and never using it!! I have three bags to shift  :)

My Grandmother always kept her plain flour in the freezer, even past its use by date and it was just fine for ages. Just remember if you do this make sure when you go to use it you let it raise back to room temperature or what ever you're making just won't turn out right.

I keep mine in the fridge to keep the bugs out of it. And I nuke it briefly to warm it up.

Somebody did a study not long ago of the nutritional value of foods kept way past their sell-by. If memory serves, flour is good...like, forever.

I keep telling my husband that, but he works in a supermarket and EVERYTHING we have MUST be in date... :P

Yeah, UK short sell-by dates are a real drag, and my other half is firm about them. I was toasting some bread I had kept frozen, so it was WAY out of its sell-by date, and he freaked on me.

And I'm, like, "what's going to happen to me? I'm going to come down with the dreaded bread poisoning?"

My theory is, if it doesn't smell bad, I'll eat it.

I know, I have this thing about cheese...if it has mold on the outside cut it off & eat the non moldy stuff. Must be something that I've picked up from my parents who used to buy HUGE blocks of cheese and used to do that. My dad used to call it 'the protective mold layer'...

I never knew you could keep flour in the freezer  :-\\\\

I am not that fussy about use by dates....if it smells odd...looks iffy...gone mouldy or soggy..then I don't eat it.

I remember my mum as kids giving us yoghurts for supper "because they are going off at midnight"

I am the same, I eat anything after the date so long as it isn't odd looking/smelling.

me too and the boyfriend always FREAKS out about it, like if something is alright at 11:59 it will suddenly go spoiled at 12:01 or if we get mince meat and it's in date but the blood has drained out a bit he wont eat it because it's a bit grey, like that matters when it's in chilli!

Hahahaha

I also eat anything after the date as long as it smells ok and doesn't look to funky.  Sometimes stuff goes before the sell by date, sometimes, it lasts a long time.  I'm still here ok ;-)
