Momma Mia: Possible Spoiler
« on: October 01, 2008, 01:09:35 PM »
I have to get this off my chest.  Watching Momma Mia, one of the actors looked SO FAMILIAR somehow I was driven to go and check.

It turns out that one of the 'fathers' of the bride had a prior incarnation as one of the coolest James Bonds EVER.  I won't mention any names, but it is totally verifyable on the internet.

The rest of the movie is too girlie to be of any use, but I thought it was great that they brought in a heavy-weight to go up against Meryl Streep.

Hope that doesn't spoil anybody's enjoyment.

How is that a spoiler? It was on the posters and stuff, wasn't it?

(The movie is too girlie for this girl, even though I do like some Abba now and again.)
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

Yes, I would have thought that Pierce Brosnan being in it is common knowledge by now - particularly considering that the movie has been out since early July.  :)

Garry, sometimes I worry about you!  You did this with Samuel L. Jackson a few months ago, and now Pierce Brosnan!  EVERYONE already knows this!!!

 ;D

Maybe Garry's setting up his credentials to become a High Court Judge?

It couldn't be known by everybody because it took me by surprise and I had to go looking for the connection in the movie database.  In fact, it was just only an inkling of recognition that was gnawing at me that prompted my checking it out.

Also just to further demonstrate, one of the god-mothers in Momma Mia, the tall one who had a dance scene with all the young men, was positively *EXUDING* sex appeal.  I couldn't hardly wait to find out who she was.  But it turned out that she was never in anything really big - she had a Polish name as I recall.

So everybody couldn't know - even when the actress is incredibly HOT.  And I'm pleased to be able to point out a very intricate coincidence.   :D

Okay, so everyone but you...  ;D  Seriously, any Bond fan knows that Pierce Brosnan played him (and RECENTLY!), and his name is on all the Mamma Mia posters...and there were loads of articles out when it was announced that he'd accepted a role in Mamma Mia!  Perhaps it's a coincidence, but not a particularly intricate one - that's what actors do!  It's like being suprised that Mr Darcy is in Mamma Mia, or Joanna Kramer, or Molly Weasley... ;D

As for Christine Baranski - she's pretty famous in the US for a supporting role as best friend Mary Ann on Cybil Shephard's mid-90s sitcom, "Cybill".  I've loved her ever since. :)

Yep, she is great in Cybill.  Also as the Summer Camp leader in 'Addams Family Values', alongside The Biscuit (John Cage) from Ali McBeale.

Garry....sorry for teasing!  :-*

Mr Darcy.  As in *THE* Mr Darcy?  As in Jane Austin?

Oh well, for me they are startling discoveries.   :-[

Christine Baranski is also a famous musical theatre actress. She played a role in the film version of Chicago - one of the few leads/supporting actors who had training!

And answering my own question from above, I have checked and can confirm that one of the other fathers indeed did play Mr Darcy in an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice several years ago.   Momma Mia is positively dripping with connections.

He was also Mr Darcy (inspired from said performance) in the movie adaptations of the Bridget Jones' Diary books.   ;)

It seems to me, father 3 was just pulled off the streets though.   :-\\\\

Momma Mia is positively dripping with connections.

And so is Mamma Mia.  ;)

Colin Firth is sort of the definitive Mr. Darcy. I think most people know that ... don't they?

I'll always think of Colin Firth as the hero in Fever Pitch.  My perfect man!

It's funny, I always pinned the DEFINITIVE Mr Darcy as Lawrence Olivier, but I've never really watched any of the subsequent adaptations of Pride and Prejudice.

What's weirder on the Momma Mia connection that I found out from back tracing, is that the guy who played Mr Darcy from Momma Mia was opposite Kiera Knightley.  And she entered into my consciousness in a film called 'Atonement' where she wore the absolute totally sexiest dress EVER.

There is NO WAY you could look at her in that green dress and not look on the movie database to find out who she was.  NO WAY.  But if she was playing Elizabeth in P&P, then *somebody* must have known she had talent.
