moving belongings from port in London to Orkney?
« on: October 08, 2008, 04:04:00 AM »
I am looking into shipping options for my household goods from Oregon to Orkney in Scotland, and have gotten some quotes from movers.  The quote is quite a bit less if I have my belongings delivered to a warehouse near London, then arrange myself to get them up to Orkney.  I am trying to find out how much it will cost me to hire a moving van to move everything myself, in order to see if I can really save money, but don't know who does that over-by.  Any suggestions or tips on hiring a moving van?  Thanks!

I don't know about Orkney, but I had a terrible time finding a (small) rental van that I could drive one-way from Northern Ireland to England. Crossing water makes everything about ten times more difficult, and substantially more expensive. :-\\\\

Hi there,

I know of a place in Windsor who did a fantastic rate for me hiring out a Luton sized van for the weekend when I helped my mate move back here from Amsterdam. This was back in 2005, I'm not 100% sure if they're still around though, and I can't quite remember the name. From memory the weekend rate was like £150, unlimited miles and permission to take abroad, full insurance etc etc. Only cost on top was fuel.

however, look at the smaller rental places like these guys above - you might be surprised. In the meantime If I remember the name, I'll post it up!

cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

I always use these guys http://www.wheelsltd.com/  They are reasonably priced and a nice company to deal with.
