Wisconsin Driving License
« on: May 26, 2004, 05:11:00 PM »
Hi all, the big move is coming up tomorrow and I just had a quick question about driving if anyone can help! After studying the Wisconsin motorists handbook  ::) I found a section that goes something like this:

The following people who are non-residents of Wisconsin may drive with a valid license from their home state or country while living in Wisconsin as long as they are at leasy 16 years old and their prvilege to operate a motor vehicle in wisconsin is not suspended or revoked:

*Foreign Tourists, who are here for up to one year

Now i'll be going over on the spouse visa, so strictly speaking I will be a Wisconsin resident. But do you think I can drive on my license for a year? A day even?

Thanks in advance, please tell me I can drive :)

I'd think so. After all, you could rent a car. Anyway, Americans can drive on their US license over here for up to a year, so I'm not surprised it would  be the same the other way.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I know David's allowed to drive in the US, so I don't see why not. :) Perhaps it's a state to state thing, but what you quoted seems to indicate that you'll be just fine, as long as your UK license is valid. And good luck tomorrow!

We were at the DMV yesterday. Kevin took (and passed) his written exam. He was told that because he has a DL from England that he can now (after he passed) drive alone, but still must take the behind the wheel test - which is scheduled next Friday  [smiley=guitarist.gif]

woot! Congrats to Kev.

Kingbeast - best of luck for a smooth move. I also agree you'll probably be fine on your UK DL for a while. All the regs differ by state but I think its generally across the board that you have at least 6 mo - a year to pass your tests.

My congrats to Kev also. Well im here in Wisconsin now, we went and bought a Buick, got some insurance so i've been driving a little. I cant do the written test yet though, not until i get my SSN number. Im still a little wary of the laws here, no one really seems to know whether or not I should be driving. if I get in trouble i'll just pass it off as immigrant ignorance :)

Kingbeast... most states allow you to drive for 6 months on your UK license same as for out of state.  You should be fine.
