I enjoyed this one much more than last week.

I don't blame you.  Last week you were robbed on Maryland!

I laughed out loud at some point during this week's episode but now I can't remember when it was.  I think maybe when the horse was riding away with him?  :D

Mrs. Robinson, I can't believe Stephen Fry was in Georgia last November when we were there and he didn't choose to celebrate Thanksgiving with one of our families! ;)  Mind you, I wouldn't have enjoyed having a cameraman hanging about.

Now I must do a bit of hat eating...munch, munch, crunch...yummmm...tasty.

off on a tangent but for a grey Monday morning giggle you might enjoy this - particularly if you are also a fan of 'House'

The place with the dead bodies was so fascinating.  It's great that people donate their bodies to research like that.

Indeed, but it does beg the question, what sort of person would indeed agree to donate their body to that place?

Great programme last night. Fascinating!

Someone who isn't sentimental about death and the human body!  I'd like to think I could do something like that when the time comes.

I had never seen nor heard of deep fried turkey before, is this the norm in Georgia or did he just stumble onto something different.

What is deep fried turkey like, anybody? ???

I don't know if it's popular to cook it that way in Georgia, but I've never had it myself.

Maybe you should post this question on the Thanksgiving thread and some other Georgians might stumble across it?  :)

I think it's just a Southern thing. My aunt is from NC and had it and I know a few folks in MD who do it, too.

I think, when you get down to the eating of it, it's not a whole lot different from roasting it. Frying it seals in the juices so the turkey doesn't dry out too much.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Deep frying turkeys is quite popular in the Northwewst too.  And every year someone in America doesn't read the directions and cautions and sets fire to their garage or deck with the blazing hot fryer.    ::)

I quite enjoyed Stephen Fry's show last night.  It will be a while before he reaches Washington state and he will probably stay in the Seattle vicinity while he's there but it was awfully nice to see a tv show that didn't portray us as nutcases.   :)

I'm way behind as we didn't watch this until a couple of nights ago, but oh I really enjoyed this episode - the South!  The way it was done - it seemed more slowed down than the New England one (how appropo - lol!)...like he was really stopping along the way for fun, and whiskey - that was great!  Liked the dead bodies thing - that was very interesting & I wasn't aware of that being in Knoxville.  And I liked the way he ended with the college football game & how OTT I'm sure that seemed to British audiences (it really did to me - lol!).  :P

Florida - well at least he went to the Everglades, but IMO he missed off the best parts of Florida which aren't Miami/the Atlantic coast...but rather the Gulf Coast parts, but oh well - he probably wouldn't have liked the Gulf Coast either because of the heat/humidity/etc (and you have to know the right places to go - to get away from the concrete resorty parts).  And yeah, the upper part of Florida is like the South - around Tallahassee & the panhandle, but certainly not the bottom part of Florida, but it's a separation/distinction that would be missed off a quick overview like this.

Next episode:  voodoo - New Orleans - Mardi Gras, Delta Blues, Motown, Amish... (you can get that off the written description on the Beeb's website) - just fab!  Can't wait!  :D

When does this show come on?  I'm outta the loop!  My boss was asking me about sweet potatoes with marshmallows as a "savoury" dish after watching the show.  He said the show makes him want to visit America, he is really intrigued about it now....  :)

It's on Sunday evenings - at either 8 or 9 pm.  You can still catch up on it using BBC I-Player though!  :)

Hee - my hubby was (and is) thoroughly disgusted by sweet potatoes with marshmallows & brown sugar etc on them...  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

I've never been a huge fan myself, but I will usually eat some to be polite & I've had better sweet potatoes/marshmallows/etc than others from time to time, but dang it, it's tradition!  Plus the look on my husband's face the first time he encountered them was priceless!  Too funny not to put them before him again sometime...  ;D
