Sorry to hear of your initial experience.

Anyone else that encounters problems registering with an NHS surgery .... say you are going to complain ... ask for the name and address of the PCT. You will find that just asking that works wonders! You will tend to find that the objections to registering you seem to evaporate!

If they don't, do proceed to complain to the PCT!

Thanks John. I was so happy and relieved at how the second place was completely different and made it easy. Would have loved to brandish that PCT threat at the first place, lol!

My American wife simply phoned the surgery in the first week she was here, they asked her to go in afternoon, registered her and didn't even look at passport or visa, just checked my details apparently

GOD I CANT WAIT TO GET THERE! You may be having some issues due to miss-information but at least they recognize that you have the right to health care. I am interested to see how this plays out.
Do. Or do not. There is no Try.

did anyone else need to provide proof of work to register?  i just went and was told that i need a letter from my (soon to be) employer before i could register.  i'm a swiss citizen, and was told that all EEA (and swiss) nationals need to have something like that.  ithought that was kind of strange...  thankfully i'm starting my new job next week or else i'd be out of luck... ugh.

According to my flow chart for registration, if the person is from the EEC/Switzerland, they need to produce "a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), E112, E119 or E128 or passport if from Ireland". If an EHIC is produced: "provide free medical treatment that is "medically necessary". If an E112 is produced: "entitlement will be specified on the form". If an E119 or E128 is produced: "treat for any conditions, including pre-existing ones".

ETA: the DofH website seems to suggest you only need proof of citizenship: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/Entitlementsandcharges/OverseasVisitors/Browsable/DH_074381

I was able to register both me an my husband by just walking into a surgery in our catchment area. We're both here on work visas. They gave me some forms to fill out and she took copies of our passports and a council tax bill. She let me sign for my husband as well and asked if we had any children we'd like to register. Took less than five minutes, and I didn't have to use any of the arsenal of paperwork I had with me in case (letters from employers, copy of the actual visas, paystubs, etc.)

This was on a Friday, and she told me to call back on Wednesday to see if we had been entered into the system properly. It all seemed pretty easy. Maybe it just depends on the particular surgery?
