Economic Stimulus Payment - Are we eligible?
« on: October 14, 2008, 02:15:11 PM »
I just wanted to know if us ex-pats are entitled to the Economic Stimulus Payment, or the $300 Tax Voucher that US Taxpayers are getting this year.

My total salary for 2007 was earned in the UK (working for NHS so not even a US company), and my AGI is nil, but I can't get through to anyone at the IRS at the emabassy to find out.

Anyone know?

Thanks

My husband received it.  He claimed the Foreign Earned Income exclusion.

Yes. I received it. You just have to file your taxes and it should be sent to you. I think theres a cut off time tho, for filing and receiving it.. which is fastly approaching... so check that out.

Yesterday was the end date for extention if you filed form 4868 (6 monhts: 2 months automatic extention for overseas tax payers and form 4868 gives you a further 4 months).  There is another way to file for further extention, but I don't know the particulars on that.

Bah.  I finally got in touch with the IRS.  The guy said that because I didn't pay into Social Security this year, that I'm not eligible.  I don't understand why though-- hatsumomo you said your husband got it and claimed the exclusion-- I did as well.  I even made sure to file my return in time (did it 2 weeks ago and filled in a 4868 ages ago).

My husband (and others here i'm sure) lived in the UK for the whole tax year, didn't contribute to the US at all and filled in his US tax return as per instructions and he got it (although he didn't expect to).  I know a lot of other people here did too.   ???

There's a Social Security agreement between the UK & the USA.  Basically if you're paying your NI contributions in the UK the US won't tax you further in that regard...  (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

I know this comes from the DWP, but here's a link to the Social Security Agreement between the UK & USA.

I got $300-- don't know why.  Mailed the check into my bank... It's nearly worth £200 now as opposed to £150 when I received it.  The falling pound is a bit rubbish.
