Unfortunately, from my experience credit checks aren't the same as in the states where you're entitled to 1 free every year (without payment details).

Experian seems to have a hand in pretty much everything over here, so I'd say go with their free trial, but be sure to cancel before you get charged.
Also, if you're a quidco member you get
£7 cashback for signing up to the 1 month free trial. I can see why they ask for you debit card, because anywhere I've gone to apply for credit they always ask for a debit card here (phone, loans etc.), as debit cards (even without photo ID) is considered a form of ID.

If you go through Quidco, think of it this way: at least the credit check's free if you forget to cancel (its £6.99 to view your credit history, but a further £5.95 to view your credit score).
