FOUND (maybe): Good tuna
« on: October 17, 2008, 08:24:05 AM »
In Sainsbury's they have albacore tuna for £1.49 a tin. (It's a tin in a blue and grey box.)

I bought three, just because I was so happy that there might be normal good tuna in my life again. Haven't gotten a chance to open and/or eat any yet.

Will report back in the next few days to let folks know how it is, and I'll double-check the brand name.

I haven't seen that before! I have bought very nice tuna in a jar at Sainsbury's before, though, but it is expensive. This sounds like a much more affordable option! Let me know what it's like!  :)

I buy albacore tuna in Costco, but havent seen any in Sainsburys apart from the same one Chary saw...£2.99 for a tiny jar!

I'll keep my eyes open for that once my Costco stock runs out...

I confess I've never understood these threads on tuna...what's wrong with normal tuna??  Why pay that much money for something that's going to get diluted with condiments/tomato/lettuce/onion/etc on a sandwich? :P

I'm not trying to be cheeky, really, I just don't get all the fuss!

(shrugs) Quality is quality.  Its kind of like tea or coffee: you may like one blend that's grown / sourced in one particular place over another.  Its really just down to preference.   ;)  (Or like chocolate: they're so much to choose from, but you'll always have one particular flavour / brand that you go for over another...)

Just personal preference, I guess. But non-albacore tuna just looks and smells a bit like catfood to me.  :P  It's worth paying a bit more for albacore to me.

Oh goodness, I want GOOD tuna!  I bought some at Co-Op last week and when I opened the tin it was all brown and fishy smelling  [smiley=puke.gif]

I just want nice tuna...tuna that doesn't make me gag when I open it or try to eat it :(
And I totally agree with chary on the cat food smell!

On a similar note, has anyone seen talapia in the UK?  I am pretty sure it is available....

I'll eat the usual tuna here, especially well mixed with mayo for a sandwich. But I do prefer the albacore for other stuff.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

That's how I feel about it. I can't imagine using the brown, smelly stuff in something like a nicoise salad. I usually get the expensive jar stuff from Sainsburys for that, but I'm excited there's a better (cheaper!) alternative!!!

Thanks for the heads up! I don't belong to Costco, or have one near us,  so this is good news for me!

The brand is Premium Selection, and I'm glad to hear it was good.

I love albacore tuna, and often I don't mix it with condiments. I used to regularly just open a can and eat it straight (something I haven't been able to do for most of the last year and a half). I do prefer it in sandwiches, just because the texture is nicer and firmer.

If I'm making fishcakes, I'll probably stick with the chunk light kind. After all, that's getting mixed with salmon, potatoes, and onion anyway.

I use mayonnaise, lemon juice, pepper and nutmeg.  :)

I know logically that there's nothing wrong with ordinary tuna. It's just that I look at it and .... BLECH!
