Hi All :)

First of all everyone who is waiting for visas to be processed, GOOD LUCK! That will be us next May and I already know I'm going to be a wreck so you have my sympathy. I'm sure they will all go through without a hitch! I have to say I'll have to do it all over again too for my green card in case we go back to the States in future and that seems even worse than applying for visas for the UK!

I'm up in Yorkshire, Ripon to be precise. It's about 20 miles north of Harrogate and a beautiful part of the world. Rory (aka Tiger) is currently working away on an island off Alaska but he'll be back in Arkansas hopefully by the end of the week and will stay there now until the wedding (MAY woohoo! Hawaii! woohoo!).

I'm over in the States in October as you will see from my tickertape AND Tiger has just decided he can make it over to see me here in early December so I'm over the moon. That will be something to look forward to when I'm bawling my eyes out on the plane home after my visit. I'm also going out to spend New Year's with him, a bit of an extravagance but we didn't want to start off the year we're getting married in on different continents so it's a case of saving every penny we can right now. Soooo worth it though  [smiley=heart.gif]

How are those of you who made the move to the UK getting on? Is it all you thought it would be?

Sam (I'm cringing writing this but just in case my fella decides to venture on here...and I wouldn't put it past him because he loves hearing me talk about you guys, he's Tiger and I'm...ahem...Bunny :p or Sam hehe).

I have banned my husband from this site - I wont even tell him what it is called b/c I know he'd be so embarrased about the things I have said about him (us) and take the piss.  :P

And Sam, having that next visit to look foward to will help you so much!  Its the absolute best thing to help you through the pains of and LDR.

Bloody hell wish I'd thought of that! When I was reading up on all the immigration info on this site I told him what it was called. He has a memory like an elephant unlike me so when I started talking about this thread he was like "oh this is the UK Yankee website?". I'm so busted ha ha. I can hope that he'll never find this one thread amongst all the others there are, but honestly it's only a matter of time I think  ;D

So Tim arrives tomorrow? How exciting!!! Do you have anything planned? Ignore that question if you've already posted about it...I'll get to it in about 2020 when I finally catch up on this thread :)

Sam

LOL

We're headed down to DC for a week next week, as Tim's never been there, followed by a family picnic where he gets to meet my zillion relatives...a few days in Philly, afew days being a local tourist, and lots of down time.  Oh, and a party on august 1 for Tim to meet some of my friends.

I want to get him a digital photo frame BUT I need the correct UK plug....So where can I get this without shipping directly to him from amazon uk?

Any ideas? Geezz I was like I will just go buy one but duhh the plugs are different...

I booked my ticket today too so let the excitement build as its my first trip over the pond ;-)

Some things from Amazon.co.uk will ship to the US.  Have you tried to have it shipped to you directly?

I shipped something to a friend of his in the UK to hold for me last xmas.. do  you know any of his friends well enough to ask them to ship to them?

Lily we're getting married at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu. If you're there in May I might see you! I've done sooo much research on getting married in Hawaii so if there is anything I might be able to help with just ask!

ohh, i may indeed have some questions as we get more into our planning.  we were holding off on plans until i found a job, but i imagine we'll start thinking about it more now!

carey, good luck on your visa! hope your wait is over very soon!

josy: good luck as your wedding nears!

zoya: glad to hear you had a fantastic time and have a trip to look forward to!  where in the uk will you be visiting?

Random ethical question.

A friend of mine got laid off in Illinois, but received a job offer in Michigan, so last weekend she moved to MI.  Her new job doesn't start until Aug 2, so she is claiming unemployment from the state of illinois. Is this ethical?  I mean, technically she HAS a job AND she left the state!  I don't know what to say to her when I read a complaint about not getting her unemployment cheque yet.

I think it depends on why her job doesn't start until 8/2.  If she requested that late of a start date so she could move, and didn't negotiate a higher salary/signing bonus/relocation expenses to cover the gap period/moving costs, then I don't think it's really fair of her to claim unemployment benefits since she's willingly going through that (extended) period of unemployment.

If they said she can't start until then, that's a different matter, since presumably if she could start tomorrow, she would (moving issues aside).

It also would depend on how long she's been unemployed, but I'm guessing that if she's waiting on a check, it hasn't been that long.

ohh lilybelle it was fabulous which I expected nothing less! I am flying into Newcastle, he lives in a small town/village/city (those confuse me a bit on what's what).  He is already starting to plan to
1. get to the lake district for a few nights
2. go to a football game (if there is one) - I just want to go to the pub near the stadium
besides that yea I know he would take me to London ect...but I want to stay where he is does that make sense? I don't want to be traveling all over the creation when I just want to be with him.
Maybe its just me ;-)

On another note I laughed about the men being banned from this site...Well I have told the BF but thank god he is not all about the internet like me so would not have a clue how to find the forum and I know he would not be bothered to even try to find any of this. SCORE! ;-)

She told them she needed to move and get herself settled first. Her employer wanted to put her in their training class that started on July 13, but she said she wouldn't be ready yet.  She got laid off mid-june, and had this interview/job offer by the end of June....so I completely agree that she shouldn't be claiming Unemployment, but I'm not sure how to tell her what she's doing is potentially wrong and could bite her in the butt later.

I don't know that you really can, unless it's in a very vague "oh, I was reading this article about a guy who claimed unemployment for a week and a half even though he had a job offer, and then he had to [pay it back/pay more taxes/whatever]".  From personal experience, just jumping and saying "I think doing this is wrong and the government could/should kick you in the butt for doing it" will not go anywhere.

Good point. Maybe I'll see if I can find a recent article about someone who's done that and gotten in trouble so I have something to back it up with.
