Went to a double-screening today...
1 - The Cove - oh my god what a film. A beautifully constructed, well told story about what goes on in Taiji, Japan and the slaughtering of dolphins. Absolutely harrowing, but not until the end, when you've been told about who's who, what's what, and the fascinating characters that got a group together to secretly film the activities in order to expose the truth.
It's like watching The Bourne Identity, except it's real life. Fascinating people, and a real wake-up call. I did not want to see this, as anything animal-cruelty related upsets me immediately - but I am SO GLAD I saw this. During the horrible part (which you know is coming, and it's not overdone), I simply put my head in my hands and openly wept, along with others in the theater (ok, maybe I cried the most, but there were certainly emotions going through the theater).
I would say a 'must-see', but wouldn't force it. I do think it's something that everyone MUST know about though. You can read more and see the trailer (nothing terrible in the trailer) here:
www.thecovemovie.comThe Hurt Locker - if you want an intense seemingly inside look at what bomb expert go through in Iraq, and a lifelike Iraqi war experience, then I do recommend it. A few star surprises turn up, and the acting is good, but... I wasn't crazy about it.
