I really don't understand all the fuss. I'm an American and a huge fan of both Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross.

Is such outrage common in the UK?

I always thought Brits really liberal. From most of the Brit shows I've seen like Little Britain,
Coupling, & Mighty Boosh, the humor over there to me has always been really cheeky and something I've enjoyed.

I'm just confused about why so many people are angry over a prank call.

No.  It's just that a couple of the reactionary newspapers got a hold of the story and whipped people into a frenzy about it.  The people who made the complaints were not even listening to the show.  All the complaints were made after the newspaper printed the story.

I think it comes down to money. It has already been noted that Jonathan Ross is the highest paid presenter on British tv and people don't like that. Because the BBC is publicly funded they are going to be scrutinized and how they deal with this is going to be under a microscope.

I think it is ridiculous how much time and energy has been spent on this. It's a freakin' storm in a tea-cup, really. I think Brand was right to resign and as much as I like Jonathan Ross and enjoy watching his show, I hope he follows suit.

Wow it really has got out of hand now, although I think what they did was stupid and immature the fallout is ridiculous.  Talk about hysterical.

This is just crazy.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Russell Brand and Jonathan Woss aren't funny. I don't find any of their jokes remotely funny. Are they comedians? Who actually does find them funny? I find them so lame. Who is giving these idiots the ratings and keeping them in business?

Now Harry Enfield is a funny guy!

I think the real enemy in this is the BBC. My wife and I are just so fed up with it. Everyone is broke these days but we still have to pay this crappy T.V. license. And what for? Storylines on Eastenders about paedophiles and Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross leaving lewd messages on peoples' answering machines. Why the hell do people tolerate it? When is this country going to wake up and call their MPs and repeal the TV licensing act? BBC should go out there and get advertisers like everyone else. There's no excuse for it.

That's odd ... I thought he was on the BBC too.  :-X

Its absolutely ridiculous.  I can't believe how upset people are over this.  Who cares?

I'd like to see people get this upset over something that actually matters.

I see that Georgina Ballie, the grand-daughter of Leonard Sachs, has sold her story, such as it is, to a tabloid newspaper, and, no doubt, will make the most of the free publicity to advance her "career".

Responding to an earlier poster who said that they thought Britain was quite liberal about these matters, and couldn't see why such a fuss was being made, I think the reason may be that while us Brits are quite OK with the F-word on TV and (to a lesser extent on the radio), nudity, explicit sexual stuff, and so on, gratuititous cruelty is something else altogether, and humiliating the popular Leonard Sachs aged 78 for a cheap laugh has won Brand and Ross few friends.

However Leonard was played the clip and given the option to veto it's playing and didn't. Then complained after, so it seems everyone made a bad call here.

The Daily Mail had a story which took a high moral tone and also included pictures showing acres of Ms Baillie's cleavage. This pattern was repeated across the tabloids. I have disliked Jonathan Ross since he first hosted chat shows in the 1980s, and I never knew much about the Brand guy until this week.

I guess it takes people's minds off the the stock markets and Sarah Palin.

I read in the paper today that sales of "Fawlty Towers" boxed DVD sets and tickets to Russell Brand concerts have increased since the "scandal" erupted, which makes me wonder if there may be a manufactured aspect to it.

It is outrageous, calling up someones grandad and saying you shagged his grandaughter is out of order on MANY levels. what about the poor women herself who has been used , a grandad who has had to had the whole thing spat at him

even if it didnt get on air that is wrong. to broadcast it, is just unbelievable.

thats why its a big deal.

i think its pretty sick in the head that saturday night is open voyeristic shots of guts in holby or casualty. if people want to spend saturday night watching sick and ill people then you got more problems than paying yr tv licence.

Minty, I'm with you about the grandfather thing, but I have to tell you that the guts in Casualty are made of plastic and the sick and ill people are actors. Some of them get better, too.
