Tim has a cupboard he calls the "airing cupboard"...what is it?!

It is a warm dry cupboard that you put laundry in to dry.

Usually outside the bathroom- for the towels, etc. Mine has the hot water heater in it, which makes it warm.

His is upstairs in the bedroom, but it has the hot water heater in it...I just had no clue what he was talking about and felt too stupid to ask him.

That's why this lovely website is here (to answer the questions that should be obvious answers, but sometimes aren't)   ;)

If there's room in there you can put a small drying rack and dry your undies or whatever  ;D
Or if something is still damp off the line -- or dryer -- you can stick it in there.  Yeah, its the "airing" that confused me -- how can you "air" something in a totally enclosed space?

Me too.  I just didn't get it.  We use drying racks in front of the fireplace since it's been too rainy to hang things out...the same towels have been out for at least two weeks!

An airing cupboard is a great place to dry clothes. I don't think it works that well to dry them completely, but if they are a little damp, put them in the airing cupboard finish them off. I miss having one.

But I digress -- it takes all sorts.  Some find the "primitive" life in other countries perfectly acceptable (if not preferable)  And others find it beyond comprehension.

I think people have those drying racks hanging from the ceiling in front of the fire in family room/parlor/kitchen.
We called the family room the kitchen and the room where the food was cooked was the back kitchen. There is a reason for that but I can't remember what it is.

BTS. I think you are right as generalization.
I tell many people of this forum and the number of Americans who have moved to the UK. I'm interested in what they think but they don't say say anything.

My DD has one of those racks over the bath, which is convenient for very drippy things but not so convenient when you want to use the bath!  Drying clothes always seems a pretty big issue in the UK -- even if you have a dryer.

Well, obviously Americans are desperate to live in the UK in order to have drying racks!  And the Brits must be desperate to get away from drying racks, right?

No I think this explains it better:

Americans are desperate to get to live in the UK because of the drying racks.

Brits are desperate to live in America because we only have one tap that disperses hot and cold water...at the same time!  WOW...technology is AMAZING!

I'm not sure if the trade off is fair though....gain drying racks but give up mixer taps...I'll take one faucet any day!
