Have you flown laterly?
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:27:35 PM »
I think two members of the list have said they have flown recently and that the planes have plenty of empty seats? Can anyone else give their observations?
The airlines have been very quiet latterly and I wonder what is going on with them now that the price of fuel has dropped dramatically.

I flew from Chicago to Heathrow last month and the flights were full each way. My hopes for laying across two seats were shattered :)

I took a veeeeeeeery empty BA night flight (seriously, the entire back of the plane had about 10 people) which left from Dulles at 11:00pm. I asked the flight attendants about it, and they said that it was so empty because it was so late. But according to them, all the earlier flights had been full.

They also said that they weren't planning to cancel this night flight because it lined up so nicely time-wise for flights going on to India and the rest of Asia, which must be a popular route with their business and first-class customers.

I flew to NY about 6 weeks ago.  It was packed there and only had a few empty seats at the very back on the return.

I flew mid September on BA and as usual, Flight 1502/1503 from Manchester to New York JFK was JAM PACKED...and I mean JAM PACKED. However, that service has now been cancelled which is a real real real b*tch for me...however, I think the plane was needed down at Heathrow  I loved that flight.

We just flew to and from Italy, and our planes were always busy!

I don't think you can really draw any broad conclusions from individual experiences.  Some flights are going to be full for various reasons - destination, season, school holidays, day of the week, time of day, etc etc etc...  Some flights are going to have available seats (usually for the opposite reasons)...

I'm flying late next week and expecting it to be utter chaos being the Friday before Thanksgiving.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

When I took my overnight flight from Detroit to Heathrow there were lots of open seats in coach......so people spread out all over.

Buuuttt....when I flew back to the US (my flight left at like, 9am) it was packed to the max.

BTW...I left late Sept. and returned mid Oct.

I haven't flown recently but I heard most airlines are cutting back capacity so I wonder if that will have the effect of those flights that are going whether they'll be jam packed?

I saw BA is having a flight sale now.  I looked at April/May for us - 2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant and it was only £977 to Baltimore rt.  That seems pretty cheap.  I think it worked out to just over £300 for adult all tax inclusive.  Sale is only running until Tuesday, however, but maybe they'll have more sales as time goes on.

I read in Mondays  USA Today that the airlines (general statement) are dropping their fuel surcharge but are increasing their airfares. I think that is for domestic flights. There were some adjustments for international also.
The industry expect to post giant loses for the year.
