Blueberry bagels?
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:02:13 PM »
I don't miss very many American foods, but I have had a serious craving for blueberry bagels for the last few months, and I can't seem to find them anywhere. About 6 months ago Tesco very briefly stocked a new bagel brand that had a blueberry and cranberry variety that I bought about 5 packs of for the freezer, but both disappeared shortly thereafter.

I'm failing to find any in the supermarkets and none of the bagel kiosks in train stations seem to do them, either. I'm not desperate enough to pay $50 in international shipping for some (hell, I'd learn to make my own before I pay that much!), but I thought perhaps someone here might have any ideas? Anyone know where I might find some, either in London, or a UK-based online shop? thanks.

I love blueberry bagels!  Sadly I haven't found any either.  The traditional bagel shops in north London don't extend their repertoire past poppyseed most of the time.   And the chain shops (the ones you would find in train stations etc) are getting better on the variety front, but still don't have very many sweet flavours.  Bummer...

I did find this online...but it looks pricey.

edit:  Doesn't look that pricey if you look at per unit price, but you would need to have space to store 72 bagels!!

Make 'em yourself!! It's really not that hard, just a bit time consuming. I can post a recipe if you are interested, and, if you have a bread maker, it's even easier. And they taste SO MUCH better than the store-bought ones here - though being in London, at least you have the good bagel shops. I'd kill for a decent poppy seed bagel right now!

(only 10 more days until I can get one!)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Ooh! You're right, the mail order is pricey, but they've got a location on Shaftsbury Ave I didn't know about. I've emailed that store to see how frequently they bake blueberry bagels and if I could order a dozen on the sly to pick up, but I'm still waiting to hear back...

EDIT: The store manager got back to me!
Thank for bring this into our attention and we apologies for any
inconveniences it may have caused, due to blueberry shortage in our baker we
had difficulty providing them to our customers, but now that has been
resolved and we will start stocking them from Monday 17th Nov.

Ooh, actually if you've got a good bread machine recipe that'd be great. I make lots of other foods from scratch, but just never tried bagels before, and at least the machine would cut out a few steps in the process!

Oh, and don't be jealous of the Brick Lane bagels - my office is literally 20m from them and I haven't been there in months. They're not really like American bagels at all - more like rolls that have been misted with a tiny squished hole in the middle. They're okay as their own thing, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for them being like what we're used to! (Also, if you go, make SURE you say "no butter" or you'll honestly get an inch thick slab of it on there. It's really gross!)
