Very Important Question!
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:35:59 PM »
Hello. I am currently waiting for my FLR M application to be processed and sent back to me, been waiting nearly two months now which I understand is about average currently.

But....
Yesterday evening my husband and I were bringing in groceries and I slipped and fell outside. I have injured my ankle which my husband assures me is just a sprained ankle, but I would like to have it looked at by a doctor obviously.

I know I am able to go to a doctor since I am currently here on a fiance visa, but I need my passport with the fiance visa in it for this don't I?

And if I need my passport is there anyway I can go about getting it back from the home office WITHOUT cancelling the applicaton?

Thanks for any and all help!

Cassandra

When my parents were here visiting my Mother came down with a throat infection, she just went to our local surgery and paid a small fee, maybe it was £12 or £24, I can't remember. Just go to the surgery and ask them. Good luck!

Let this be a lesson to everyone to register with a GP as soon as you arrive on your fiance visa - you never know what will happen even if you don't anticipate ever needing to see a GP.

If you can find a sympathetic GP practice they might register you as a temporary patient until your visa is back - then you would have to bring it in to become a permanent patient. It would be at the descretion of the Practice Manager. If you think it could be broken you could go to A&E - they are required to provide emergency treatment regardless of visa status if it is truly an emergency.

If you do approach the GP take as much documentation as you have - anything with your address, particularly utility bills or bank statements - to back up the fact that you do live here and intend to settle permanently. Receipts for shipping posessions and/or receipts for excess baggage charges can help too.

ETA: of course racheeeeeeeeeeee is right - I tend to overlook the obvious sometimes. LOL. You can always be seen privately!  :)

I registered with my GP and they never once asked me for my passport or visa...

If its really bad you can go to A&E, they will fix you up too.

Aye i know when i moved here i was living up in Aberdeen. I just went to the practice that was the closest to where i was living.. No one even batted a eye didn't ask for a scrap of paperwork.. Just my general information. where i was living. birthdate .. general medical history etc.
Just my experience.. yours may vary :)

Ditto. I think it's the luck of the draw. If you go with your husband, in particular, I suspect they'll be fine. But it does seem that some practices are more lax about documentation than others.

Good luck!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I think it varies from area to area. In one of the towns covered by the Primary Care Trust I work for there is quite a bit of fraud going on at the moment - we average a couple of calls a day from people and from GP practices asking for guidance about registration. It's great to hear that some people don't have any trouble at all though!!!  :D

Yeah, I've been here 8+ years and have been registered with no less than 7 surgeries! Not a single one asked for my visa/passport. Some of those surgeries were very rural, others were in big cities or market towns.

I consider myself very lucky! ;D

When I finally came back to the UK with my spousal visa I registered with the GP who treated me as a private patient and I was never asked once for my passport or my visa nor any identification at all. Hmmm...

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will have to call and see what happens I guess. Going to take along my american driving I.D. and the letter from the Home Office confirming they have my passport and such. And also perhaps printing out the email I saved from when my fiance application was approved.

Ankle is not so bad today thankfully. Swelling has gone down a bit and I can balance on my heel now, but can't put the whole foot down without wanting to cry a little. Just keeping it elevated and switching from hot to cold at the moment. Seems to be helping.

My husband has been taking wonderful care of me.   ;D
Bless his heart, coming home from work and having to deal with me....then cooking and such. *hugs him tightly*

I'm pretty sure they never looked at my visa when I registered, but I was with my MIL and everyone at reception knew her, so maybe that's why....

I had to pay for private care the first time I visited London (was just meeting DH for the first time) because I got strep throat.  It cost me £60, plus about £14 for meds.

Hope your ankle feels better soon.... I have twisted mine before, when I went to the doc they just told me to stay off of it anyway, and it was better in about 3 days.  I bet if you just keep up with the hot and cold compresses, it should get better in a few days...

Just so everyone knows, I did call the UKBA just to ask if I could have my passport back without cancelling anything....AND OF COURSE UKBA will NOT give you back your passport for medical reasons unless you want to cancel the whole process. And of course they will not even tell me if it's on it's way until I have gone past 14 weeks.

I actually broke down in tears on the phone with the lady, because she was like "Well if it's THAT important that you need to go to the doctor then surely you would be ok with cancelling it and we can send your passport back to you"

But I did not get angry with her or anything...I said "It IS that important or I would not be calling in the first place, and I know you cannot tell me anything about if it has been processed, but I do not want to cancel it and waste the money my husband paid as well at the last two months that I have been waiting, so I will just wait longer and hope that my ankle can heal itself. Thank you. Goodbye."

So yeah...just thought I would post that for everyone else's information that has read this post from me.

Husband is taking the day off from work tomorrow, to take me to his doctor to see if they will let me in without my passport and visa. I have met his doctor before when I was here over Christmas, because my husband and I both had a really bad sickness. He seems like a nice man, treated my husband and told me to do the same as what he told my husband to do.

Again....Thank you everyone for your advice. Now I am going to take a nap until my husband gets home.

Did you not take a copy of the visa before you sent the passport off?

If not, I would just go straight to A&E.  If they try and bill you, stall it.
