A US food question...
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:52:25 AM »
So my mother is stocking up on things for the boys as we arrive in less than a week now (!).

Both boys eat yogurt and here we get them the full fat - or whole milk-based - versions. They also both eat adult yogurt, not stuff branded for kids.

Mom just had a look, and she says she can't find any whole milk yogurt at her supermarket! It's a big supermarket so I'm a bit perplexed. Is whole milk yogurt not readily available? I can't recall as I rarely ate it when I lived there.

I imagine she'll find a fuller range of Stoneyfield and other yogurts at Whole Foods and other natural food shops, but we're trying to avoid too much running around for things right now.

I can't believe I'm needing to be re-educated in yogurt!!  ::) ;D

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I just did a quick look at the website for Stop & Shop (standard US supermarket) and there are plenty of full-fat yoghurts. Dannon, Yoplait, Stonyfield Farm, etc.

Huh. Probably by mother being dense then. She said she could only find 2% ones.

::)

MTA, that said, I just did a search for Giant/Peapod and the only one available online is Stonyfield's plain yogurt. Maybe it's just a Giant thing...

Perhaps she's looking for something to specifically say "whole milk", when perhaps all that's labelled specifically is the other kinds, those made with 2% or skim milk?  Just a guess, never have been a yogurt connoisseur.

Just a quick note, C- even the yogurt here has high-fructose corn syrup! Don't know how you feel about that, but it's something you might want to look out for.  >:(

Yuck!

I think Stonyfield is free of HFC though. At least it was back when I worked at a natural food store (yeeeeeearrs ago!).

That's right. BTW, Trader Joe's usually has it the cheapest, (and also has its own brand, as well.) and Whole Foods sometimes has Stoneyfield on sale, too.

Giant has an Organic line (with a huge tub) that's good, too.

Cool! Thanks. Skinny Sammy does NOT need low fat yogurt!

Caryn it's hard to find in some areas....  you can get Yo Baby yogurt at most supermarkets and it may be the only one you can find. (And that one is in flavoured versions so HFC may be in it) Walmart here in the sticks is also now stocking Oikos brand (Stoneyfield in another life) Greek yogurt which is very good.  Other wise it's higher end stores for full fat yogurt.  Our Kroger has it in the Organic/Health food section and area Harris Teeters do to.  So tell her to try in those areas.  Usually it's Stoneyfield brand. They just keep it in a different section.  :P

I have neve seen any flavoured yoghurt in the UK that does not have sugar added. I only eat plain yogurt for that reason.

Does even plain yogurt in the US have HFC added?

Here's a list of some of the yogurts that contain no HFCS:

• Breyer’s
• Brown Cow
• Dannon All Natural Vanilla Yogurt
• Dannon All Natural Coffee Yogurt
• Dannon Lite & Fit Vanilla Yogurt
• Great Value Light Nonfat Yogurt (most varieties, if not all)
• Horizon Organic Fat Free Yogurt
• Nancys Reduced Fat Plain
• Nancy’s Whole Milk Honey Yogurt
• Stoneyfield Farm Yogurt
• Stoneyfield Farm Yobaby Yogurt

Be careful, most yogurts in the US contain a lot of artificial sweetners.

Yes...and whether or not artificial sweeteners are any healthier is up for debate, but they are not HFCS

Even my Wal-Mart in a small western PA town had Horizon milk and Stoneyfield Farm full fat yogurt and I lived in Hicksville.

As for artifical sweetners, why does the UK have both sugar and artifical sweetners in sodas?  I loved Icy Lemon Fanta and the last time my husband bought it was labelled "now 30% less sugar".  Sure, cause they have added artifical stuff that tastes gross.   ::)

That is really annoying, as I won't drink aspartame, I'd rather have sugar.  I suggest buying Rock's Organic squash and mixing with sparkling water.  There are some natural fizzy drinks around, but you have to search.

Sorry for hijack.
