broccoli and cheese
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:08:52 AM »
I think my family normally uses Velveeta, but obviously that won't work.  How do you generally make your cheese sauce for broccoli and cauli?  Do you use those cheese sauce packets?

I usually just make a white sauce (milk, plain flour, butter and seasoning) and then stir in lots of grated mature cheddar cheese :) - e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A515332.

cool, that looks great!  thanks!

hoping my in-laws won't think it is too strange to serve broccoli and cheese with my Thanksgiving dinner, we do it every year in Texas!   ;)
But I have a feeling they won't really like any of it anyway, they are already booing everything I have said I am making besides the turkey and dressing.
And I think my MIL is terrified of seasoning, so we will see what happens!   :P

Mmm do cauliflower cheese also.

My MIL doens't eat garlic or any seasonings either and it totally makes me think..GARLIC BREAD??? GARLIC BREAD??? so I go out of my way to cook without seasonings, or if I do make something without garlic, I just let her know.

Am I am amazing daugher in law or what???
(I don't like doing it, but I feel angelic when I do it)

I tried making cheese sauce not that long ago, I did everything stated but I didn't have the flour...I'm guessing that's key because mine did not come out right!!!

I love cauliflower and cheese too, MIL does it sometimes at Sunday Lunch.

Yea, not to big on the seasonings with the inlaws either. DH loves my cooking, I'm guessing because I season things and use garlic (and he likes whatever I make food wise, I think better than his mums!). I love garlic!

Pretty good Racheee that you do that for her, shows a big effort on your part. I haven't fed my MIL much, but whatever I did she said she liked..who knows though! lol

All I do when my in laws come is feed them...
Partly so I can spend my day in the kitchen cooking and I don't have to spend too much time talking to them.
 ;)
Its a half truth!

LMAO!  Mine live across the street, so I don't have much choice...
They are really sweet, actually, just not adventurous about food AT ALL!  I made some chili which wasn't even spicy (IMO) and they acted like it was going to blow out their lower intestine or something... it was pretty much the same reaction when I made hamburgers.  MIL never uses seasonings, just roasts the meat plain and covers with Bisto gravy.  I'm getting used to it....
They do like meatloaf and deviled eggs, so they have tried a few things.  But when I mentioned the pecan pie and pumpkin pie I am making they just gave me a funny look and said they only eat meat pies.   ::)
Anyway, I have some coworkers who are looking forward to trying something new, so they will be getting loads of pie on Friday!

Mine live 250 miles away. They only come up to see their grandson about 5 times a year...this situation suits me fine. Just fine.

I either make a homemade cheese sauce or use Primula-
