chocolate orange cake
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:33:17 AM »
So, DH's bday is coming up and I would like to bake him a cake.  He goes nuts for those Terry's chocolate oranges, and so I had the idea of baking him a chocolate orange cake and possibly using segments of a chocolate orange for the garnish.  I've been looking around online, but I was just curious if anyone here has a great and easy recipe for a chocolate orange cake before I get adventurous and try one of the online recipes.  I am pretty sure someone on here mentioned a Jaffa cake-like cake with orange marmalade in the middle a while back, but couldn't find the post....
Thanks!!

I have one!  But it's at home, and I'm not back until Sunday night.  I think it is a Nigella, and I seem to recall doing cupcakes, but it can be adapted.

That's really thoughtful Jewlz!
DH and I don't like chocolate orange, not sure where or why that was thought of! Just odd to me, but anyway this is the first thing I found.

Vicky's sounds more interesting, Nigella usually has good recipes.
Let us know how it goes,x

Awwww.... I mentioned to him just now about baking him a cake and he said he only had one birthday cake when he was 9 years old that his granny baked him!   :\\\'(  Now I really feel the need to do something special, but I am such a novice baker...
I found this recipe, and it looks amazing, but sort of complicated:

what do you guys think?

It does look nice, though not very birthday cake like.

If I remember correctly, mine was basically a light chocolate cake with marmalade, and very easy.

I did a search and I am pretty sure I found the same recipe you have Vicky.  Is it something like this:

http://blogs.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/food/2006/12/nigellas_chocolate_orange_cake.html

It looks SUPER easy to do, which is a plus, but the recipes seem to suggest just topping with sieved icing sugar, not sure that would be very birthday-like, either.  Maybe if after topping with icing sugar, I garnished with the chocolate orange segments and some candied orange peel it would look fancier?  Or do you think I should do some sort of icing on it instead?

That's the baby!   ;D

Icing sugar, choc orange segments and candles I think would work great as a birthday cake!  And maybe Smarties, for that authentic 6-year-old's birthday cake feel!

OK, its on!!!!!    ;D
This recipe is great since it doesn't require many ingredients, most of which we already have.  Turns out I am making a huge Thanksgiving dinner this year and I know we will be spending a ton of money on food this week already (plus after all that cooking I won't want to do anything too complicated)!

Oh, what exactly do they mean by a loose-bottomed cake tin?  Is it a springform pan?   :-\\\\

It's like a regular tin, but has a loose bottom. No spring/clip mechanism, just a solid ring around the sides. A springform would probably work, if you have one. Otherwise, the loose-bottomed tins are everywhere. I got mine at TK Maxx, but Wilkinson has them too, and probably anywhere else you look.

I don't own one of these, so I just make sure I grease and line a normal baking tin.

Whenever I'm looking for an orange-ish cake, this is my fall-back.  Even though the recipe doesn't call for it, I drizzle a bit of chocolate over the top and serve with Green & Black's chocolate ice cream.

I'm a dope.  Didn't see the earlier link was the same one as on the Nigella site.  D'oh!

I think this is it:  Lady Goldenglow Chocolate Cake.  I think I may suggest this to DH for DD's birthday on Tuesday...   Looks really simple and you could always use a favourite marmalade as a cheat for the glaze.   ;)

On a side note: if your DH likes orange marmalade try Devon Marmalade (drools) - it has honey in it.  IMO its to die for!   ;D

That does look nice.... unfortunately I have already bought all the stuff for the other cake, which calls for marmalade, so I didn't see your post on the Devon marmalade in time.  I got some other kind, but next time I will remember to get some of the stuff with honey in!
